hey im lookin on the internet at some local hardware stores websites for supplys for a cage im going to attempt to build, i dont want a huge cage but one to upgrade my 18inch cube, i was thinking 18inch by 18inch by maybe .. 48inch tall, but anyways
my question iss !

when i look online at the store i dont see any of the building supplys i need, like .. 90* metal framing, or mesh

Q: is this mean its not in the store or just not shown on the websites ?

ps. im lookin on homedepot, lowes, crappy tire maybe. if can find anyhting i listed send me a link :)

Darn, lol. i dont want to end up going there and deciding that id rather buy one then make one, like .. if its to expencive. my step dad will be driving me there and he will get pissed off :p

cause i dont have any local reptile store, i have local pet stores with shitty cages or something like .. DIY plastic pop togeather tubes that you just make the box with tubes and slide the mesh over it, it fits all losely and it was over priced

order online theres some prime cages and there worth the bucks and there really nice if your keeping your cham in your room

ordering online would mean i need to pay some like 45$ shipping, and from what ive saved up, a 45$ shipping would pretty mcuh cut my budget so low that its not even worth buying a cage

You might put together a list of what you think you need and call the store to see if a) they have what you need and b) about what it costs.

For mesh, you should figure out how many feet you'll need. Some stores only sell screen door material in rolls, but others will measure it out by the foot for you.

By the time you buy all the materials and the tools required to assemble a screen cage. You can buy a large 24x24x48 from LLL and pay for shipping. I priced it out myself because i like to build my own enclosures and cutomize them a bit. It was a lot more economical to just buy one, unless you plan on buying enuff stuff to build 3-4 cages then it would be worth your while. Im not sure about canada but i think cham nation might sell cages. i check so many sites i get them mixed up.

one thing to keep in mind. chameleons are not cheap, period. so remember if your saving for a cage, you need to save for a vet visit too. you need to also save up for new UVB lamps because they don't last forever. you'll need new lamps every 7-8 months. so if you are thinking 'this is too much money' maybe getting a cham isn't worth getting into? not trying to disappoint, but ya gotta be realistic.

I will say that with rare exception "do it yourself" is not usually cheaper and is frequently more expensive than buying something ready made. Do it yourself if you want to because it's very satisfying to create something that is actually usable and functioning and sustains a life. But if it's just to save money, forget it.

Don't disdain the PVC snap together, mesh cover cages. They are very animal and human friendly. I've just switched to them and love them.

You aren't housing Godzilla...in fact, I once read that the purpose of the cage is not to contain your chameleon, it's to contain your feeders. It can be lightweight and soft and still do a wonderful job.

This is a good way of looking at it.

But the metal cages aren't very strong either. they just let more light through and come apart for better cleaning in a easier fashion.
