Superworms!

I think I may try and give Monty a few superworms today as a treat. He's had maybe 2 crickets so far and we're going to a tropical pet store (mostly fish..) but they have superworms so I thought I'd try them.

I know they may or may not work/he may become addicted to them ect but hopefully this works out.

Also does anyone have food advice (monty is a little skinny but eats like a monster) for fattening him up a little?

increase food quantity
superworms are fine for up to 20% of diet, max.

Thank you, I do understand that he is growing so I have been feeding him as much as he eats (usually around 10 crickets).

He knows when he is going to be fed. When I open the cage door he climbs onto his basking branch because that's where he.. just.. eats. I guess it's like his dining room table.

I will feed him a worm or two as a treat occasionally. He's eaten 3 today. He was really hungry.

He is going through a shed too, so I expect him to eat more often.

Thank you.

how can he eat like a monster only eating two crickets!! Agreed with Sandra that he needs to be offered more food if you are only giving him a few crickets a day. They are not a fatty feeder like most of the worms.

go easy on the superworms - you dont want him to get "stuck" on eating those :)

A few? I run out of crickets in three days. So he eats like 10 a day and then won't eat any more. It's just how much he eats

I have seen the blog and will read it again thank you :) Again even while I'm a 'senior' member I still have almost 0% experience compared to you guys

Anyway I will be sure easy on the worms. I only fed him 3 today because we ran out of crickets.

remind me, how old is your chameleon? what size crickets?

I'm pretty sure around 5-6 mo at least.. He's grown a little bit.

We get crickets that are maybe 3/4 an inch long (his mouth isnt too big) and he eats a lot.. We get like 50 crickets and run out in like 4-5 days

10 crickets a day isn't abnormal for a chameleon 5-6 months old. No problem to add a couple superworms a week, and/or other prey

I am thinking about hornworms (I have given up isopods, they are too messy. I found mold in their home and cleaned it out and they started dying, too)..

That's too bad. They're a very good feeder choice.
the mold would likely be from the food you put in there. They're pretty clean and easy to keep, if the container /environment is right.

IMO superworms are a necessity. They are the perfect insect to inject medicines into. I can get .15 ml of reptaid in a single worm.

Oh yes the mold was definitely from the food. But I'm just saying that the polies I had died as soon as I cleaned out the gross stuff. :(

They are so awesome. Except I'm scared of them more than I am of crickets. They're so weird.

Also is 6$ for 50 worms a good price?
