superworm substrate dimensions?

I have thousands of superworms on hand. is it more important to have square footage in a shallow pan or would they be okay in a bin with enough bran to cover them? Please hurry with suggestions or experiences. i am currently changing out their bran as i am writing this and any answers may save me some time. thanx as always.

Personally, I like shallow trays for supers, but I've kept in deeper containers and they did OK. Shallow makes maintenence easier though...

I use shallow longer containers. I also put a small Tupperware lid in there for the wet gutload items like veggies and fruits. That way their substrate stays dry. I mix the dry gutload in with the base substrate.

thanx

finally!!!!! replies. thanx everyone. I figured shallow was probably the way to go. just so many feeders, I was hoping to get away with two containers, instead of 4-6. as I have said before: there are NO shortcuts with chams. thanx.

I've never had oats or bran smell. I like shallower containers but I still keep about 2" of gutload in it. For supers/mealies, I get whole oat flour and add extra to my powdered gutload so it doesnt cost as much to use and bulks it up. Then I can use a little sifter to get the worms (live and dead) out easily.

Oh god yes. i HATE picking them out. that is the worst part. i think it only smells when you don't change it frequently enough. i use kellogs all bran cereal and haven't had any odor issues yet. just make sure to keep veggies on a small lid of something and keep from making contact to bran. otherwise, no harm no foul (get it).
