Superworm medium?

I know that a lot of you recommend oats as a medium for superworms, but I have a question about it. I picked up a bag of rolled oats. Use it as is or do I drop it in the blender and grind it up?

I wouldnt recommend straight oats as your substrate. they can be part of it (as is).

What Im keeping superworms/kingworms and mealworms in:

3 cups ground alfalfa
1 -3 cups wheat bran
1 -2 cups crushed barley
1/2 cup oats and/or stabalized rice bran
1 cup powdered kelp
1 cup air dried, shredded dandelion leaves
1/4 cup course ground seeds (sunflower seeds, sesame, squash, millet)
1/4 cup of ground (dead and dry) garry oak and maple tree leaves (dont overdo the leaves - too many tanins not good for cham)
3 tablespoons organic dried coconut

Additionally: add daily (on top of dry meal) small pieces of carrot, apple, orange, fresh dandelion, steamed squash, papaya, arugula, etc. Remove uneaten "wet" produce and replace with fresh every few days (do not give too much "wet" food or the substrate will go moldy or attract mites)

That's an awesome list! I've printed your list out before but I was unable to locate most of your items at the local grocery store?

I also notice that most of your ingredients seem to be grounded. Should you also grind the oats?

I get alfalfa, bran, barley, kelp powder, sunflower seeds and millet at a place that sells feed for horses, chickens, goats, etc. I get large quantities for cheap prices that way.

But most of this stuff is avaiable in pet stores, health food stores, etc.

No, I dont think you necessariy need to grind. I sometimes do, sometimes dont.

Thanks, Sandra! You've been very helpful once again!! :)

I also keep mine is a gry gutload. I prefer it to be powdered. Then I can just sift out any live worms, shed skin, dead worms, and large pieces of other stuff whenever I need to. Especially with small worms since they are harder to find. If you keep a large number of them, smaller ones, or you breed them it makes it a lot easier in my experience. If you breed them you can also sift out different sizes with various sizes of mesh.

Amazing recommendation, I use a similar version of this. Always organic fresh vegetables for all my feeders. I also get all my ingredients at a feed store down the street from my house.
