Sunken eyes?

Has a vet been treating him in the past for the MBD? They usually give liquid calcium and a shot that draws the calcium to the bones.

when he got out the ER :)p) I had to give him shots in his front legs, liq calcium by mouth and had feed him. i had to do that for a month- i have not taken him to a vet to check up- but i cant find one- i cant take him back to the emergency one- its $80 to walk in the door

Larger cage might be good if I'm not mistaken. He's an adult male correct? His enclosure is a bit small... correct me someone if I'm wrong. :)

When I got my adult veiled, he was in a TINY cage, tiny enough that I keep my baby chams in it.

When I got him a bigger cage, he started eating more, moving more and seemed happier. I use a 2'x2'x3'.

Drive to Orlando and take him to Dr. Alfonso. 407-295-7547. Dr. Alfonso is great with chameleons.....he has a bunch himself.

Dr. Alfonso's excellent and not to expensive. I'm 2 hours from Orlando and he's my chameleon vet.

If all you have been doing for the MBD since you stopped the liquid calcium is to give the chameleon phoenix worms its not likey going to be enough to keep the calcium in balance...so I would recommend that you dust the insects at most feedings with a phos.-free calcium powder.

BTW...calcium imbalances not only affect the bones but a number of other things in the chameleon's system so its important to keep it in balance.

You said..."I had to give him shots in his front legs"...shots of what??

I still think that you need to take him to a vet again.

the shots where for the MBD i cant remember exactly the details it was a while ago- the dust i have is phos. free D3- i dust crickets every time- the worms (wax and meal) not- i only feed him those while i wait for the others to arrive. and yes i will defiantly get him to a vet- i love him to much! im looking into that one in orlando or if i can find one in tampa

Howdy Justine,

Be sure that your chameleon can and does get within 6"-12" of the Reptisun 5.0 UVB tube (no glass or plastic between the UVB tube's surface and your chameleon). It is likely that your chameleon will also benefit from having all of the other lights above the enclosure pointed downward into it. It is also reasonable to use just one basking light and have it pointed down from above too .

he is able to get right to the top- the UVB light rests right on top- only the screen of the cage between.
i have a lot of light (this sound funny) but he sleeps very easy if he starts walking and goes under a leaf- its like the min there is no light he feels its time to nap :p so i put them on one side- 2 facing down 3 from the side-so that side is hot for him?(?)

ill try put more facing directly down :) thanks

You said..."the dust i have is phos. free D3"...do you mean phos.-free CALCIUM with D3??

I dust at most feedings with a phos-free CALCIUM to make up for whatever is lacking in the insects that the chameleon is fed.

I dust twice a month with a vitamin powder that has a beta carotene source of vitamin A. Beta carotene won't build up in the system like the preformed vitamin A will. Some people give a LITTLE bit of preformed vitamin A to ensure that they have enough because there is controversy as to whether chameleons can convert the beta carotene....but excess preformed vitamin A can prevent the D3 from doing its job and lead to MBD...so caution is advised.

I dust twice a month with a phos.-free calcium/D3 powder because my chameleons don't get direct sunlight as a rule. D3 can also build up in the system which is why I only use it twice a month.

The above is a maintanence diet....used when the chameleon has no MBD.

Calcium, phos. D3 and vitamin A are the main players in bone health and play other important parts in the chameleon's system too...so its important that they are in balance as I have said before. You need to look at what you feed the chameleon, what you feed the insects and what you supplement with when trying to balance things.

Gutloading/feeding the insects a nutritious diet, UVB exposure and appropriate basking/cage temperatures also play a part in this balance and a chameleon's health.

You said..."he sleeps very easy if he starts walking and goes under a leaf"...perhaps he is walking under the leaf because he wants to sleep? This worries me because he shouldn't be sleeping during the day.

I hope that you can get your chameleon to the vet in time and that he can be brought back to health.

I too hope he can be saved. Please get him to a vet before it's too late. He's such a cute little guy. I've been watching him on here since the MBD started. Jann

Hey I know this is an old thread, but just wanted to let you know that you shouldn't position your lights like that. Always have them on top of the cage shining down. By having them on the sides like that it's always hitting your chams line of vision. It will destroy his vision. You don't need 7 lights either. Just one on top of the cage pointing down.

this is his home :)

Cage Info:
Cage Type – Screen L3ft x W1.5ft x D1.5ft
Lighting – Mostly all ZooMed 75w, 5 UVA 1 UVB on top- his time runs from 7:15 -+ to 8:30 ( with daylight savings its all an hour back)
Temperature – normally around 70 – near 80 in basking and the floor is around 65- i have a temp gage
Humidity – i have a gage and it is always above 50% without fail- i mist him in the morning early afternoon and evenings
Plants – i cant remember the name- orbeal something- they are green and yellow :)
Location – on a platform in my room-not particularly close to any vents- maybe the ceiling fan

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon – Veiled, male he is just over 2 i believe- i have had him since summer of 06.
Handling – maybe twice a week when i take him out for a super good misting
Feeding – Right now b/c of MBD its Phoenix worms- i mix it up with crickets ( dusted) wax worms now and then and some meal worms. I have a tray they i put maybe 5-10 (relatively small ) worm in first thing in the morning. It will be finished by the time i get home- well not the meal worms i don’t think he likes those to much
Supplements – i have a calcium dust- but don’t use it that often- with Phoenix worms
Watering – i drip water on him almost everyday to insure he drinks and i watch him drink. Spray 1-3 times a day. On warm days i put him outside in the sun and set a small sprinkler on
Fecal Description – i haven’t had him tested exactly but when he was in the ER they did test and didn’t say he had any... his droppings are white and brown-sometimes all white- nothing i have seen strange...
History – MBD that i am trying to fix
Current Problem – sunken eyes- MBD...not so sure- just want him to be ok!

the vet shes refering u to is only 35.00 to walk in the door technically its the exam fee and fecal is about another 35. don't know about mbd costs but he is very resonable in price!! Call him (407)295-7547
