Summer warning for new keepers

Lightning bugs(or fireflys) are starting to come out. New keepers may not know but do not feed these to your chameleon or let them eat these. :)

also beware of other bugs, rule of thumb- bright colors = posion. better safe than sorry!

oh and while outdoor sunning, keep an eye out for your chameleons, this is the time of year they "get away" or get swooped up by that hungry hawk. be careful ya'll! :)

Another thing - check on them often when they are basking in the sun. They can easily over heat and they aren't smart enough to move into shade themselves! I spend a lot of time moving Monty around the patio from sun to shade!

I definitely would not allow for uncovered free ranging outdoors in my area. The birds here pick up small dogs and kittens I certainly wouldn't trust them around something as small as a chameleon.

We have a red tailed hawk that has taken up residence around our house not to mention all the Kestrels I see scooting around. At night there are screech owls, barn owls, and I have seen a great horned owl at least once. I think the latter is responsible for disappearing kittens and puppies at night...

I would also think neighborhood cats, rodents, and even irritated Corvidae could pose a significant risk. I've seen scrub jays attack cats I can't imagine what they would do if they felt a chameleon was a threat to their nest.

We don't get fireflies but I would think Monarch butterflies could pose a significant risk plus ladybugs, western black widow spiders are everywhere (I kill at least 4 or 5 a day), flies are prominent in my area and many are fresh off of poo... Dang the more I think about it indoors is sounding better and better! ha haaa
