You are quite right! And theoretically they could even become invasive species here in the great white north because they can overwinter as eggs. The adults may not survive the winter but the eggs most certainly will.

If they are native to your area then you can keep them with impunity as they are not illegal to keep. However native ones from seasonal areas do not produce year round and are not as thick as tropical species for the most part nor as productive. However they can still be good.

Are they living and breeding there? Whoever told you they werent native did they know the species? If they are adventive, meaning not native but established and breeding in the wild there you will not run afoul of the law keeping them there. As an example we can ship green banana roaches and discoids to Florida because they are an adventive species. Florida allows native and adventive species of roaches to be shipped there.

The one that people usually use as feeder is indian walking stick (Carausius morosus). This species is considered pest in the US (especially in California -San Diego and Orange County).
ALL stick insects, excluding the one that is native to US, are ILLEGAL to keep. And, as far as I knew, this is a federal law.
The one that is native to US mostly emit foul odor when attacked.
So, many people stay away from feeding the insects to their chameleon.

There are permits that allow also for the keeping of non native sticks for exibition purposes. However one must be approved and have facilities that pass inspection to do so and not just institiutions such as zoos have these permits. Also one will not get busted for keeping non native sticks that are feral or established where they are.
