Squee is 'fake' drinking!!??

It wasn't pleasant, but I put him on my leg facing away from me, and placed the syringe in the corner of his mouth, using the tip to keep his mouth open. Once the liquid started going into his mouth he would calm down and put his head up. Sometimes I could get him to gape at me or while he was eating I could slip the syringe into the corner of his mouth and give it to him while he was on a branch. He bit me once, thankfully the teeth didn't get me. If you've ever seen a melleri gape or look in its mouth while they're eating, you'll see teeth like a small piranha. Lol

Sounds like he didnt react to the taste like Squee is doing. He doesnt protest
if I am giving him something that tastes good :D

No thankyou, I would not want the jaws of an adult melleri chomping down
on me either

Does anyone ever search their soul, and ask themselves if we are doing a
good thing by keeping chams in captivity???!!!!

Yes, and I imagine it is a very emotional, controversial and potentially volatile subject. As with anything there are those who go to the extremes such as some of the philosophies of activist groups like PETA, which I do not have an intimate knowledge of and do not outright condemn them as they have done a lot of good with increasing awareness of how animals are treated. I personally think that people who wonder and search for the location of the garden of Eden should just stop and realize I think we already live there but have not been the best gardeners. While I believe the plant earth would survive and even thrive inspite of our worst, we certainly may not and deservedly so if we are so careless as to destroy our habitat. I think the arrogance of humanity may be its downfall.

ANYWAY I hope poor Squee will feel better with his new medicine. Wishing you, him and all his companions a Happy New Year!

You can always look at it from another perspective. How many captive animals live longer due to good care? Many face stress in the wild due to constant territorial battles, and most probably have some health issues. And I know my feeders eat better than I do! Besides, I've seen the free range and setups you have. They are spoiled! :D

I'm confused about the continuation of the Baytril, but I'm no expert. I would think 14 days would be sufficient, especially when there is a new diagnosis, but again, I'm no vet.

Hope the New Year brings a quick recovery! :)

Thanks :)

I'm confused too! I thought surly he would say disscontinue the Baytril in
light of this new diagnosis!!??
I would think, if he has high uric acid, and needs more hydration, Baytril
would complicate things!?

How long was the original dosage supposed to go for? It does seem like a bit much to me, but I'm just going by what I've read here on the forums through other members.

The first time (before the blood tests) it was Baytril for 10 days.

End of dosing, and 3 days later, back to vet, only this time, we suspect more
then just infection, so blood taken, and new batch of Baytril to be given for
one week, or pending the blood results.
One week not up yet, and we know Squee has high uric acid levels.
Going through the motions of drinking water, but not really drinking it!!
Cant tell how long that has been going on!!

I HATE having to give him this stuff (Baytril), he really hates it, even if I flavor it, as soon as it hits his tongue, he
goes crazy trying to squirm out of my hand and gapes his mouth.
Yesterday, I felt so bad giving it to him, I wanted to cry!!

Poor squee and you! I hope you're able to stop the baytril soon and the new meds help when they arrive. You give your chams the very best of care, I'm sure he will do fine.
Happy new year to you all, hope he improves soon. Kath.

My father the PHD always told me that if you couldn't find a way to explain something to a 12 year old you don't understand it enough yourself. Your vet should be able to give you good reasons on why he thinks you should continue the baytril to ease your worry. I'm sure your giving him the best care possible. It's my opinion that if your not comfortable with something you should question until you are-
I hope he's feeling better real soon !

I agree, but since his instructions were only a voice mail, I could not ask him
the questions I wanted too.

He dosent live with Squee, I do! and he only see's him at his worst.
He actually acts normal most of the time, he is just a little slower the normal.

He certainly is strong enough to move quickly when he wants too!!

Noogie has started to enjoy visiting with Squee. He will sit on top of his cage
for a hour or so, just looking at each other, very calm:
