Hi there, i'm new here, and sort of to the reptile world. I currently have a 6 month old Bearded Dragon, who has been doing really well, and I think I am ready for another reptile. I have been looking extensively into chameleons and geckos, and found that I would really like a Crested Gecko, or a Jacksons Chameleon.

My question here is, how well are they as a starter chameleon? Do they fire up as bright as some of the veiled and panthers? I guess my question is are they as entertaining to raise. Also, how are there requirements for care/ living etc.. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to march into this blindly.

jacksonii dont fire up near as colorful as panthers or veileds. they require much more water and wayyyyy more care than the BD. i suggest you get a veiled which (personally) the easiest to care for considering your experience. and DO REASEARCH. dont get caught not knowing how to care for it properly, and not knowing how much time it actually takes to care for the animal. chams take a lot of time and money to care for. consider that before buying a chameleon.
 
Okay, thanks. I was leaning more towards a veiled anyways.. How much time do you all devote to a Veiled daily? I have school from 8am to 3pm.. Think that could pose as a possible issue for misting etc? Also, how long does it take a veiled to become fully grown.. I'm afraid of buying a large cage right away and freaking it out.. hehe I have alot more questions but I'll let these get answered first. Thanks!
 
i have school too. i wake up and mist him for 10 mins, then, when i get home at 3, i mist him for another 10mins. my dad usu spritzes him during the day at noon. at 18 months, my vieled is about as big as he's gonna get. im not sure when they stop growing, but a 2'x2'4' (lenth x deep x height) fits a full grown veiled nicely.
 
8-3 shoudl be fine as long as you mist him before you leave and when you get home. possibly set up a dripper. Eventually you can get an automated mister.

some key points to remember
-no substrate in the cage
-no copact uvb
-no waterfall
-dust feeders with calcium almost daily witout d3
-use d3 1-3 times a month
-only one chameleon per cage
-clean bottom of the cage frequently
-live plants > fake plants
 
Thanks guys. I'm assuming they cant go 2 or so days without food or misting can they. I'd probably be able to set up the lights on a timer and maybe find an affordable mister.. This seems to be the major issue right now is vacation time.
 
i feed mine every other day, and there's no problem. they can go a little while w/o food if necessary.
 
Okay. It won't be any time soon.. also, I understand all of the lighting, feeding, and misting. But I'm still confused as to what to do with a cage. I was looking at FLchams site where I plan to order my cham from, and they seem to have some decent cages. If I picked up the 18x18x36 cage now do you think it would last a year or so until I have some extra cash?
 
Ok, thanks. I just did a search on Ebay and nothing came up. I will look again in a bit. Thanks for the help guys.. but on the relative size is a smaller cage okay until they are fully grown
 
yes, i had my baby mellers in a 2' high, 2' wide,'2 deep cage and hes about to go into his 18x18x36, and then a much bigger cage.
 
Alright cool. I think the one I want to get is gonna be around 3 months old.. so I'll figure something out. Thanks! Oh yeah, how are mellers chameleons, don't they almost have the same appearance as Jacksons?
 
They look kind of alike except males have 1 horn, and mellers are much larger. Similar color though
 
Oh alright. If I do this I'm going to get a Veiled. Right now im reading everything off of that raising a veiled sheet. Thanks for the help! Now I just need to decide on a cage size and a safe plant!
 
look on the safe plant list. i use some kind of giant schefflaria ssry for the spelling, and some kind of palm tree.
