Soon to be a new Chameleon owner

I'm looking at buying a veiled Chameleon here in a few days, and I have probably a trillion questions (most of which have been answered by the fantastic FAQs).

I do have a few that weren't hit on, and I want to be super certain on everything before I start purchasing.

  1. If I keep a few live plants in the cage (notably Hibiscus) do they require any special form of lighting, or are the lights already present in the cage good for most live foliage?
  2. I'm planning on moving across the country within the next 6ish months, what would be the best way to travel long distance with a chameleon?
  3. I'm not sure if I plan on driving, or flying when I move, but if I do fly, does anyone know the regulations planes have regarding something like a chameleon?

Okie dokie, I think that's it for the time being, sorry if they are horrible questions that everyone has already asked, but I couldn't find much on any of this.

check with todd @ lightyourreptiles.com, he is great!

your other q's are beyond me, but someone will help!

Welcome to Chameleon Forums! :)

We are very glad you are here, and I am even more glad youve had the opportunity/forethought to do some research first. ;)

Hibiscus will not do well with just a UVB and incandescent bulb.
You will need to keep a 6500K bulb on the enclosure as well, and even then they can be tricky to keep indoors. One option is to keep a few more than you need, and have the majority outside, and rotate them as needed.

For extremely long distances, shipping the chameleon separately ahead of time is a good option. If the drive will only be 24hrs or so, you can get away carrying them yourself if you drive it straight, but if you plan on stopping even once it can become a hassle. These are just my opinions.

Generally they are not allowed. It would be best to ship it separately.

These are good questions, and its always better to ask. ;)

I didn't know shipping was an option! I'll go ahead and look into that, and if I can't figure it out, I'll come running back here since you all have already proven to be so helpful. Thanks for the thoughts on it everyone.
