I went to my local reptile shop today and he said that in august or something like that the bulbs which are like 50w+ are going to be illegal or something. So things like the exo-terra sun glos and that wont be available. Anyone else hear this? If it is true then that sucks.

I don't exactly know if it's really this law but there's one which should support the use of energy saving bulbs and the step by step ban of the normal bulbs

I think it only applies standard incandesent light bulbs, infact ive just found this.....

So it doesn't apply to the R50's & R80s etc so should cause too much of an issue.

1. UK Voluntary Phase-Out
The UK voluntary phase out schedule, adopted by major supermarkets and other large retailers and DIY chains is as follows:-
By January 2008 retailers ceased to replenish stocks of inefficient GLS lamps 150W and above.

By January 2009 they will cease to replenish stocks of inefficient GLS lamps 100W and above.

By January 2010 they will cease to replenish stocks of inefficient GLS lamps 60W and above.

By January 2011 they will cease to replenish stocks of all remaining inefficient GLS lamps and 60W candle and golfball lamps.

By 31st December 2011 they will cease selling all remaining inefficient GLS lamps and 60W candle and golfball lamps.

2. The EU Draft Regulation
A draft regulation was issued by the EU on 8th December 2008 proposing that incandescent lamps will be phased out of the EU market over a period of 4 years starting from September 2009. Broadly this encompasses the higher wattage bulbs first and then progressively encompasses lower wattages in each of the following 4 years. There are many exceptions to this regulation including directional lamps (eg spot lights), specialist lamps (eg oven lamps) and various others. The regulation has yet to be passed by the European Parliament (due March 2009) and will then need to be ratified by each member state. We will publish further information once this becomes clear.

Surely reptile bulbs would be classified under specialist lighting though? Unless of course the manufacturers are lying and the bulbs are not special and are only normal bulbs anyway? That would be a real kick in the teeth! As long as they don’t ban mega-ray bulbs I don’t really mind as my basking site is only a 40W bulb! :D Plus, this says nothing about halgoen bulbs and they're far superior anyway (in terms of heat and spectrum of light produced!)

Well who knows but the guy said like the exo-terra sun glo's etc are going to be banned so.. (N)

Wow! I'd like to see them do something that actually makes a difference
in the world like stopping cutting down all the rain forests and polluting oceans.

This law will come to North America shortly after you guys adopt it I'm sure.

There was a recent thread where someone in the lighting industry was talking
about this, he was right!
