So many questions.

Hi, it's me again.

I'm sure these questions have been asked somewhere before, sorry in advance. I'd prefer product suggestions be a bit more budget friendly for now, I'll do upgrades after I'm well-established in everything. I don't want to overdo it and stress myself out more. Amazon links welcome!

  • Which plant bulb?
  • Which basking bulb? (Eco incandescent 100w?)
  • How many plants? (2'x2'x4')
  • Hibiscus tree, inside or outside enclosure?
  • Which brand of supplements are "best"? I assume he's currently using Repti Calcium, as that is what the breeder recommends in information email.
  • Best timer for lights?
  • Which thermometer/hygrometer, combo or separate.
  • Preferred fake vines, if any. I've read mixed opinions.
  • Smart plugs or no?
  • Zoo Med combo deep dome (basking and plant) or separate?
  • Preferred thermometer gun.
  • Anything extra for gut loading?

I'll be using a pump spray for water supply until I can get a MistKing, and plan to get the Zoo Med Reptifogger. Am I missing anything? I have suggestions for products from the breeder, but suggestions from the experience of others would be great.

I might have more questions as I remember, but that is everything on my list so far.

You’ll want to have everything quality the first time to make sure your chameleon’s health stays ideal. A proper set-up can range anywhere from $500-$1000+. You’ll also want extra money saved for vet costs and emergencies, as well. Sadly, if you can’t afford that, a chameleon isn’t the right pet for you right now.

I was mainly speaking on tools such as thermometer gun, timers/accessories and the like price-wise. 😊

That being said, there are ways to cut costs.
*A cheap plant bulb is the 6500K bulb that comes free in most T5 High Output light fixtures
*A regular household incandescent bulb from the hardware store (if they’re not illegal in your state now) are cheap and work great!
*As many plants as you can fit!
*Outside unless your plant lights are strong enough
*Zoo Med, Repashy, Sticking Tongue Farms, Arcadia (be wary of the bee pollen level). All have different schedules (except for the Zoo Med and Repashy)
*A regular timer for lamps from the hardware store is cheapest.
*Either or.
*Fluker’s, but live vines are best. Just absolutely no Exo Terra or moss vines!
*If it’s your preference
*Regular one from the hardware store works perfect!
*Depends on your gutload
If you give me some time, I’ll provide links, too! Just be aware that Amazon doesn’t always have the best prices or fastest deliveries, so let me know if you want cheaper links or anything!

That would be perfect, thank you! Do you happen to have a recommendation for a specific hygrometer/thermometer? Some things, I just don't know where to start and it makes me feel a bit overwhelmed. I don't know if I should use one with a probe or enclosure-mounted.

One thing I forgot, I saw someone use Exo Terra plantation soil for repotting plants, I assume it's safe for chams, but I know some things are questionable at times.

Do you want Amazon prices or cheapest I can find? Generic hygrometers/thermometers work great, so no need to spend extra cash on a name brand! Don’t worry, we’ll help you through! You’ll want at least one probed one, plus either another probed or an enclosure mounted. I personally have one probed thermometer at the basking area (where the top of the chameleon’s back would be) and three enclosure mounted combos, one at the top near the basking area, in the middle, and one near the bottom of my cages.

What species of chameleon are you getting? The Exo Terra soil would work, but there are better options available.

Amazon, please! I was looking at some things while I was out today but wanted to check with those who are more experienced rather than what I think might be correct. Would you secure it to the side with zipties or?

I'm getting a Panther. I have read some not-so-great reviews about the Exo Terra so I would love to hear other options! Tips on keeping plants alive would be great as well because my green thumb is more of a brown thumb because every plant I get dies. 😅

Got it! Are you talking about the probed or enclosure mounted or both?

They’re amazing! What gender are you getting? With panthers you don’t really have to worry about them eating substrate (obviously keep an eye out just in case), but you can cover the soil in the pots with window screen and/or rocks too big for him/her to eat. I’m not the best at plants, but good lighting, the right amount of water, and extra nutrients in the soil works great. I use 6500K plant bulbs, organic soil without chemical fertilizers or perlite, and water the plants extra or less as needed, along with adding either worm or plant compost or frass.

Both, mainly probed. I don't know if it's supposed to just kind of dangle over a branch or just be on the side.

I'm getting a male, the egg laying of females makes me nervous. I plan to add rocks over the soil, just in case. I assume that can be found at Home Depot, Lowe's, etc.? I haven't had many plants, so I'm not sure what any of the compost or frass is. I'm a bit simple when it comes to things like that, sorry. 😅

I just kind of dangle them with them being attached at another area.

That’s so exciting! Do you know what locale he is (locale is the from the areas they’re found in in the wild, which determines their adult colorations in male panthers)? Yup, Home Depot, Lowe’s, etc. are great for that, and plants (along with Walmart, IKEA, and local nurseries, plus Etsy if you want to grow the plant from clippings)! Compost is broken down plant matter or poop, it’s a natural fertilizer. Frass is insect poop that is a great natural fertilizer, too! And no problem, ask as many questions as you need, we’re here to help!

Perfect, I can handle that.

I'm getting a Nosy Be! I love them and Ambilobe and it was such a hard decision and sometimes I still wonder if I'm making the right one lol. Blue is my favorite color, so I know I'll love it either way. But man, all of the colors are beautiful too.

Sometimes I forget that you can buy pretty much anything on the internet now lol. I have a lot to learn but I like to think I'm doing a decent job thus far. My goal is to have everything set up and running smoothly a few weeks before he arrives, just to make sure I have temperature and humidity right without worrying about him being in there and possibly messing something up. The thought of harming him because of rookie mistakes worries me a lot.

*Plant Bulb (With Fixtures)

You are a SAINT, thank you!! Man, supplements are confusing. 😅 Definitely have to read that 15 times and hope to comprehend it lol. I'm hoping to get most of the things I need soon and then deal with the enclosure itself. Again, thank you for the help so far!

And I need 5.0 for a juvenile, not the 10.0 UVB, correct?
Yes, you want the Reptisun 5.0 or Arcadia 6%.

I would also HIGHLY recommend getting a set of Dragon Ledges!! They will make your life SOOOO much easier. They will allow you to attach branches and post much easier. I actually have EVERYTHING in my enclosure floating (nothing sitting on the bottom). This allows me to just slide the bottom out, clean it, and slide it back in. Saves me so much time cleaning. No need to take the entire enclosure apart to clean!

I've had both, and while they're both gorgeous in their own right, it's always something special to see the blue on a Nosy Be for the first time in real life!

Amazing! That's the correct thing to do, but not everybody does that, so good on you! As long as you work out all of the kinks in his enclosure beforehand (which you will), ask as many questions as you need (which you are), and have the correct husbandry (we can check it for you), you should be golden! You're doing great so far! Also, just let me know if you want the cheaper prices and/or brands I like from other websites, too!

No problem. Just choose one of those brands and use the schedule with it. Let me know if I need to explain it again or differently!
And I need 5.0 for a juvenile, not the 10.0 UVB, correct?
Yes, either an Arcadia 6% (you'll want to replace it yearly) or a Zoo Med ReptiSun 5.0 (you'll want to replace it every 6 months). Both need to be the length of the cage and T5HO. Both also need to be 8-9" away from the basking branch. How old will your cham be (you'll probably have to worry about screen climbing, which means you'll need to raise the fixture off of the top of the cage by 4 inches, so from the top of the cage to the basking branch will be 5 inches away)? Also, if you want to invest in a Solarmeter 6.5 (worth it but expensive, it's literally a life saver!), you'll be able to check the UVI levels yourself (the ideal level is 3 UVI where the top of your chameleon's back will be when he's on his basking branch) and change the bulbs as needed, instead of every 6 months to a year. Let me know if I need to go more in-depth about that or explain it differently.

I think Amazon only could be a costly mistake. Due to losing so much on Prime, many of their prices have been raised to include shipping costs, which may be less elsewhere. Just one example—I use Nature's Miracle Small Animal Cage Cleaner. Compare the prices:
https://www.amazon.com/Natures-Miracle-Cleaner-Formula-Deodorizes/dp/B005D0XLVW
https://www.chewy.com/natures-miracle-small-animal-cage/dp/191402
It can also be gotten for less than $6 at Pet— or W-Mart.

  • Which plant bulb?
https://www.sansiled.com/70w-led-grow-light-full-spectrum.html
https://www.amazon.com/SANSI-Daylig...words=sansi+grow+lights&qid=1620577047&sr=8-5
Same price on Amazon, but Amazon doesn't accept all coupons, and there are many for Sansi products—some for up to 50%. https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=sansi+coupons

  • Which basking bulb? (Eco incandescent 100w?)
Maybe. Best basking bulbs are—in order:
  1. Incandescent Household
  2. Incandescent Flood (Not Spot)
  3. Halogen Flood (Not Spot)
But wattage will be a matter of trial & error—too many variables. I always start w/ 75W and move up or down depending on distance, angle, temps, etc.

  • How many plants? (2'x2'x4')
🤷‍♂️ How big? Some do with one; some have 20—it depends on species, size, growth rate, placement, & other variables. See: https://chameleonacademy.com/plants/

  • Hibiscus tree, inside or outside enclosure?
🤷‍♂️ Depends why & what you're trying to do.

  • Which brand of supplements are "best"? I assume he's currently using Repti Calcium, as that is what the breeder recommends in information email.
I would—and do—stick with breeder recommendations.

  • Best timer for lights?
I use cheap analog timers:
https://www.lowes.com/pd/Southwire-...ngle-Outlet-Mechanical-Timer-White/5000277557
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Defiant...-In-Mechanical-Timer-in-White-26378/205517336
Where I need more than one light per timer, I use one of these:
https://www.lowes.com/pd/GE-GE-Outl...Design-Indoor-Use-Only-White-46845/5001460593

  • Which thermometer/hygrometer, combo or separate.
Combo. https://www.amazon.com/Rojuna-Hygro...CCFR/ref=dp_prsubs_2?pd_rd_i=B08YP2CCFR&psc=1

  • Preferred fake vines, if any. I've read mixed opinions.
No fake plants or vines, period.

  • Smart plugs or no?
Above timers are cheaper.

  • Zoo Med combo deep dome (basking and plant) or separate?
Neither. The only light that needs a dome is basking.
https://www.amazon.com/Unknown-PZ-300-INCH-CLAMP-LIGHT/dp/B000KKLPOU
But you can get for less than half that price at a local home improvement store or...
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Bayco-SL-300-8-5-Inch-Clamp-Light-with-Aluminum-Reflector/14003467
  • Preferred thermometer gun.
https://www.amazon.com/Etekcity-Lasergrip-774-Non-contact-Thermometer/dp/B00837ZGRY

  • Am I missing anything?
Yes. Solarmeter 6.5x UVI meter

*Smart Plugs (don't use them, so again, I've never used any of these, just good reviews)
https://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-HS10...9Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=
Inkbird (I use their aquarium heater controllers and love them! They also have smart controllers but are expensive. Here's their terrarium temperature controllers): https://www.amazon.com/Inkbird-Max-1200W-Temperature-Controller-Greenhouse/dp/B01HXM5UAC
*Deep Dome For Basking And Plant Light (which size you get depends on how big-and the wattages- of the bulbs you get. If you do this, you'll want a Sansi bulb for plants, instead)
They don't have the regular or large dual domes in stock on Amazon without them being in kits
Sansi Bulb: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BRKG7X...olid=1VI34XPGOZC08&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it
Singe Deep Dome (which I prefer): they didn't have any regular or large sizes on Amazon

*Digital Infrared Temp Gun (this measures surface temps only, so only use it to occasionally spot-check areas if you decide to get it. The probed and enclosure mounted digital thermometers measure air temps, which is what you need to measure for basking temps)
