Smoke?

Will smoke bother my 1 year old male veiled? We have had some SERIOUS wildfires here in CO and you can smell the smoke from where I am. I have the windows open with an AC machine so I can cool off my room and to get good circulation. Will the smoke smell bother him?

I know of at least one member who had some chams that were in a house fire and it caused some weird fecals and took a lot of misting and system flushing to get them looking normal.

If it was me I would run a air purifier and humidifier in the room and mist heavily.

I was actually thinking about this the other day when I heard about all the wild fires in Colorado in the news. Well wishes to you and your area!

Thank you! We are not in a house fire. I did notice his fecals had a little bit of orange goo in it but I don't think that's an issue.

That is crazy I guess orange goo is how Chameleons metabolize smoke. That is the exact reported issue, orange goo in the poo.

Even though it isn't a house fire (which is the extreme) it is still similar in that the chameleon is being exposed to smoke so I would imagine treatment would be the same...

There has always been some of this goo in his poo but I was just really looking over it today to see if it was affecting him. I've read that thread before and it doesn't look like that.

The orange in the urate is from dehydration. That is a side effect of being subjected to smoke.
From my experience when being subjected to smoke. The white of the urate will be off colored (Not the typical dehydrated colors). I can best explain it as tan'ish in color.

I don't know about wildfire smoke causing harm, but I would be very cautious.

When we had our facility fire in Sept 2011, our lizards were in a different building 100 yards away. I didn't think there would be any issue.

Over the next few weeks, a few of the lizards came down with really weird respiratory infections and eye issues that we couldn't clear up. We lost a few of those animals, including Gilas.

The source of our smoke was largely plastic racking, which created a deep black putrid chemical smoke, but still...

You can't bring a Chameleon back to life, best to use preventative care. I would keep windows closed and filter/AC on as much as possible, I wouldn't want smoke or chemicals drifting in open windows.

Regardless, best of luck to you, those fires are absolutely crazy right now, and still out of control.

I'm closing the windows at any hint of smoke. I'll examine his next fecals.
