Sleeping during the day

I just recently got my first veiled chameleon, he's only about 4/5 inches - about 2 months old. I've only had him for about a week now, and everything seemed to be going normal but as of two days ago he has been sleeping when i come home from school. The first day i had just wondered if he was not used to my schedule, like with lights and noise etc. - because i get up fairly early for school but he's been sleeping during the day for the past three days now.

He's also been sleeping on the wall of the door that opens the cage, away from the light and branches.

His current cage/light setup is:

~UVB 5.0 Light
~Blue Daytime Light
~Red Nightime Light
~Basking light
~Reptibreeze 16"x16"x30" cage

I've been using the red light only at night, and the others during the day because i live in CT so it's pretty cold here right now - my room only gets to around 70 degrees w the heat on.

Not much experience here...but a reptile sleeping doesn't seem to be out of the norm. Particularly if they have a full belly

Is sleeping different than basking? Should they always be alert during daytime hours?

Yes and yes. Sleeping during the day (closed eyes) is not normal for chameleons. A one time occurrence can happen, but if it happens more than once or repeatedly, it should be considered a sign that something is off.

like lathis said mine guy is alway aware during the day even basking thoses eyes are open and moving

Magoo is pretty active during the day and around bed time when he tucks in he still has his eyes open till his lights go off

You don't need that red bulb chuck it. If by some chance your room drops below 50 degrees at night you can get a ceramic heat emitter. Him sleeping during the day means he is ill and should probably see a qualified vet A.S.A.P. They should pretty much always be alert during the day. Could we see some pics of your enclosure and him?

yes please post some pics

If you're having a red light on at night that could be why he's sleeping during the day and sleeping away from the lights. If your house is warmer that 65F there is no need for heat at night. If when you remove the red light, the chameleon still sleeps during the day then we should look at things again.

you should have NO LIGHTS running at night. none, at all. as long as your house stays above 60-65 at night then you are good. I even know a successful chameleon breeder who has been doing it for years, tell me that it can even be okay if your house drops to 55. just never below 50. but for safe measures, I'd keep your house above 60 at all times. but DEFF need to ditch the light at night. he needs to be cooled down at night about 10-15 degrees below his normal daytime temps. cooling down gives him a chance to rest. giving heat all night wont allow his body to shut down and sleep right at night, and may be whey he is sleeping during the day too. ditch the light and wait a week and see if he still sleeps during the day. let us know.
