i was just wondering why does size vary so much with chameleons, why arent they all generally the same size as are dogs or cats?

I don't think so!

All healthy, well cared for, properly housed chameleons will be very close in size. However, just like dogs, breeding genetics influence size.

I worked in our K9 unit for a long time and I have had German Shepherds that were 100 plus pounds and some that were 70 pounds!

Full grown, healthy, same-sex, same-species chams will be within pretty much the same size range (with reasonable variation). Some species show sexual dimorphism: male panthers are larger than females, all else being equal; some species of pygmies have larger females than males. Different species have different maximum sizes; veileds are going to be larger than panthers.

I agree with the above as well.
Also, the amount of heat, food intake and exposure to natural sunlight are also contributing factors.
