hey guys, ive had a bunch of silkworms for a while because they are too big for my chameleon and they were getting huge! lol I kept feeding them thinking that they needed food all the time, but i kind of ran out of food so i was going to get some mulberry leaves from a tree because its leaves havent fallen, but then i noticed that a couple have started cocooning, that was maybe 3-4 days ago...now i have about 8 cocoons haha. my question is how long does it take silkworms to emerge. The cocoons are in toilet paper rolls which i then put into an open cardboard box. Should i move them to a box with a lid? so that they dont start walking around my room? and so that they will be able to find eachother and mate?

you must have missed my thread! I have one that coccooned. I asked the same question. Was told they take about a week to hatch. Once they hatch, they don't fly or eat! I guess their purpose is to reproduce and then die? So i put my one and only coccoon in a seperate tupperware on a paper towel as I guess when they hatch out it is messy.

hey carol, i actually posted in your thread and was having a good convo with pssh i posted a pic of one of my silkies on there cause it was huge haha. I guess i should have added in a more info about is there a certain temp you should have them at? Should i just keep them all together so that they can mate?

gosh, I don't know anything about the moths. I am sure there is someone out there who does! Hello- anyone? I am still waiting for my "one" to hatch. I check it everyday but nothing!!!

I leave mine at room temps (70-ish) and they do fine. I haven't really tried keeping them at warmer temperatures, but maybe I'll test it this time. I guess I'll need another incubator.

are the moths able to climb on cardboard like the worms can? I have an empty cricket keeper so im debating on whether to just put them in there so that they are closer together and will hopefully mate :)

Yeah, they can climb, but in my experience they don't. Maybe you'll find one stupid one outside the box, but they generally stay together to mate/lay.
