Sick Veiled at Pet Store

I took a trip to one of the local pet shops in my town. They specialize in fish and exotic lizards. They have a wide variety compared to the only other pet store in town.. Petland. So when I was looking around for a mister I checked this place out. They are extremely overpriced and family owned. I used to enjoy going in there over the years. They seemed really nice and knew more than most pet stores. Well I guess over the past year or so the man passed the shop down to his daughter. She knows quite a bit but I think she is more worried about selling than caring.

A few months ago she bought a healthy baby veiled at our local reptile show. Paid $30 for her and has been attempting to sell her for over $100. The girl knew I was interested in Chameleons and was basically begging me to take her for $80. I hadn't seen the cham in about three months so I went to check on her. She always had this beautiful turquoise color. I've been there a dozen times and have never seen her anything other than turquoise. When I walked up to the cage I was expecting a large, healthy, beautiful female chameleon.

First off.. I would like to say that I couldn't even tell she was a Veiled. Her casque was barely visible. She obviously has MBD. She was so lumpy and couldn't even stand on her legs. She basically seems like she is a zombie. Her setup is a small reptibreeze (which is saying a lot considering most pet stores have adults in an all glass terrarium the size of my head). They put a Fluker's Vine with silk leaves in there. And they have a Habba Mister on top of the cage. When the mister drips it doesn't even fall on the few leaves in there. It falls straight to the poop ridden floor. Granted, they do clean it every week but it's not that hard to spot clean. One of the new guys that works there let it slip to me that she couldn't hold herself up on her back legs a few weeks ago. He said that she is better now and I should buy her. But obviously the damage is done.

I think that the dehydration would explain her casque being non-visible. Not enough calcium most likely caused the MBD. And I'm positive she has many more problems. I've never seen the poor thing move and they don't even know she is a female! Actually all of the pet stores in my area claim to have males but they are all female. Which means they do not have a laying bin. This girl at Bert's Pet Shop is 6 months old and she doesn't look it. I really want to break into this place and steal her right from under them. They were telling me that $80 is a really good price for a Veiled. Maybe a healthy Veiled from a Pet Shop it is. It's rough to see a cham that is not cared for properly in Pet Stores, but this blew me away. They might as well let her loose and fend for herself, she would have a better chance!

I'm posting a link with a pic of her. I had to sneak the pics because I was tearing them a new a**hole about the poor girl. She actually looks 10 times better here than last month. But you don't wait until she is on deaths door to actually start caring for her. Her casque has gotten a little taller and she seems less lumpy. She can also "rest" her body on her vine now too. Its difficult to see a lot of the damage because she was right under her basking light.

It should seriously be illegal to not care for a cham. And I know for a fact that she is going to sell her to a poor kid with no information.

She does have MBD based on her legs. it is sad to see. i would tell the store owner you will adopt her - not pay for her but adopt her. They can write it off as a loss and the little one won't have to die there. it is worth a try. But only if you want the job of rehabing her. We will tell you how but you would have to do it. Just something to think about.

I agree with what Laurie said. You might also get other support from people here, but you shouldn't count on that. If you can take her, we'll do what we can to help you care for her.

Id print off a few educated posts from here and blow that store owners mind. Adoption would be granted immdiately.

at least its in a screen cage, but yeah thats terrible. all the pet stores aroudn here keep them in glass. I don't even buy anything live from pet stores anymore. I just go to shows, or order stuff online. Granted, I'm way paranoid about buying a poor little animal and having it shipped. I've bought tarantulas online, they can survive a long time in a box.

When you use the right shipping company, it can be ok.
I had a baby hoe shipped from cali to MD and he did just fine.

Well, they obviously DON"T specialize in exotic lizards any more! A wake up call for them could be to print off dealer ads for healthy female veileds to prove that their ridiculous price and the cham's condition are outrageous and cruel.

Thank you for all of the support guys. I really wish I could take her. I already tried to entice the owner to give her to me, but she still wants to make a profit. I'm a 21 year old college student at the moment. I know I would have all of the time, love, support, and knowledge to help her, but financially it would be difficult. I have been loving and researching chameleons for a long time now. As much as I wanted one in the past I knew I couldn't afford it. I finally purchased my first Veiled.. Bodhi, two weeks ago. I would be doubling the amount of supplies and space needed for her. I think with the forums help along with mine she would thrive compared to her current situation. But I wouldn't want to take her and not be able to properly car for her financially. Although, I would definitely take her temporarily until I could find her a good home. That might be difficult but I would know the person she goes to knows how to care for chameleons.

On a funny note, I as do I'm sure most of you, look to our chameleons as if they are children. Sadly a lot of people have children.. or chameleons, when they cannot care for them. They may think they look cute. Or they did plenty or research but you never know until you have one. It's a responsibility. I don't care if you are a pet store, a person, a family, or a breeder. You take care of any animal you have properly. IF NOT.. IT IS ABUSE.

If something doesn't happen with this poor girl soon I WILL do something. I really wish I knew of someone to contact in order to get this place checked out. They could easily say they did everything for her, but yet she is still sick. Hopefully, if they look around and see other unhealthy animals they could bring them up to code. Or bring them down. Either way.. no animal should be treated like this.

Which store in Portland? I want to make sure I don't support their business. You can pm me if you don't want to post the name.

It's not in Portland. It's in Ashland, KY. I doubt anyone in this forum lives within even 2 hours of this place. Haha! It's a small town. I'm about 2 1/2 hours away from Cincinnati, OH. 2-3 hours away from Lexington and Louisville KY.

If you want me to.. I would gladly move in. I've always loved Portland and want to live there! Sleater-Kinney all the way!

Keep poking the store about this though. They might well decide it's better to write the animal off as a loss than keep it on display.

Are there any humane societies that have investigation officers in your area or state? Sometimes they can help.

That's really what I've been looking for. I will find a way to get in contact with somebody. They told me today that they were feeding her large crickets and she had been impacted. But now she is magically better! They will let that slip to me and then try to back track. I really don't think they intentionally did this to her.. but she is in really bad shape.
