Sick Ambanja Chameleon

Hello I have an 14 month Ambanja chameleon purchased about four weeks ago. He had settled in fine (well i thought!) until two days ago where i notice him curled up on a branch at the bottom of the VIV...

the following day i found him he was hanging from the same branch and not moving. after about four hours of not moving i place a brand new repti glow 2.0 UVB lamp 10 cm away as i was concerned he was not getting enough rays at the bottom.

hey symptoms are as follows:

Black tail
Lack of moment in his legs
sleeping during the day
Lack of energy (has hardly moved in 2 days)!

The strange thing is 2 days ago he was fine.

Crickets are dusted with E3 twice a week and between on purley calcium feed, unfortunately he will not yet hand feed so he has only been feed with large crickets but the have been gut loaded.

Viv
i have a 4x2x2 vivarium with a basking spot set @ 30C with a UVB tube distanced 12 cm away from branches, a EXO TERRA basking 75w lamp and currently a repti glow 2.0 UVB.

Sprayed 3 times a day, and a BIG DRIPPER installed.

Hymidity is at 85%

All lights have been purchased this month.

Waiting from a response from the vet but am SERIOUSLY CONCERNED about this little fella any suggestions will help me out considerably.

Tom.

First off, your UVB is too low. You need at least a 5.0 uvb bulb.

Second- can we see photos of him please?

Next- you are overdosing on the D3. That should be done twice a month, not twice a week. the calcium without d3 is used every feeding, and a multivitamin twice a month as well.

what is his basking temp in Farenheit?

can we see photos of him and your cage.

30C is about 86F, so the basking spot is fine.

I think photos of him would help, as this sounds pretty mysterious. Even if he had been getting D3 a total of 8 times this month as opposed to just 2, I don't think this would be enough to send him spiraling the drain. Especially depending on the brand, but in a single month it doesn't sound like the culprit to me, but I'm not a vet.

I think your best bet sounds like a vet visit, I don't think there's anything specific in your husbandry that we can point to and the onset was so sudden that I think it may be something you just can't fix at home. I hope you hear back from a vet soon!

Hello thank you for all your replies unfortunately shortly after i posted this thread I took him to the vets.

they informed me that he had something dislodged (food) in his gut which fluid had built up.

In his present condition we all decided that he had to be put down :(, i was informed that they only see cases in this nature once a year.

Absolutely gutted, only had the pleasure of having him five weeks!

Unsure if to pack up shop or try again...

RIP Charlie.

Tom

Oh no, I'm sorry to hear this! That is a shame, poor boy. Do you have any photos of him? I'd love to see what Charlie was like.

We are here for you if you decide after a little time whether to give it another go. We will answer any questions or concerns you have and recommend anything we feel will help you and a new chameleon have a greater chance for success. But if you decide you don't want to try again, that is ok too, we understand. Losing a pet is tough.
