Should I breed panthers and questions

I am getting my first panther chameleon within a week. The cage is currently being delivered. He is a male ambilobe 3 month old panther chameleon. I was wondering if I should try breeding for my first chameleon. I heard it wasn't too hard to breed them. I could order a female a bit after I get my male and breed them. I was just asking for some opinions from those who are more experienced. Also, how many eggs are laid? What is the average amount of eggs that hatch? And if I did breed them how many cages should I buy to be prepared for them to hatch? My plan is to sell most of the babies anyway, and keep some if I do decide to breed.

There are lots of panther chams in the market now. If these are your first, keep one for a while before deciding. You need to understand just how much work and expense even one will be. You'll have to handle the more careful health requirements of your female before, during, and after she becomes gravid. You'll then have eggs to incubate and babies to raise if all goes well. There is no requirement to breed your cham at all, and it does have its risks. They can be contented and healthy without breeding. I'd say, if you don't have a very specific reason to produce babies why do it?

Welcome to the forum

I would recommend living with your chameleon for a year at least before you think about breeding. And then get a female and wait until she is at least a year old. After you have some experience, you'll be better able to make an informed decision. Babies are a lot of work, take a lot of time and attention, and its a money loosing venture - but also a very kewl experience.

Average number of eggs is more than a dozen and less than 35. A lower number is, IMHO, better. You will need a couple baby enclosures, and then after a month you will have to sort the larger ones away from the smaller ones, so an additional few cages. And by month three all should have their own separate individual cage, especially the males. You wouldn't be selling until at least 3 months, more likely 5+ months old. So, ~20 cages.
