Hello, I have what I believe to be a massive population of Dissosteira carolina that I am able to catch. Just wondering if I'm able to ship them around the US since they already inhabit the whole dang country anyways...

GRASSHOPPERS!

I wont ship them until I know its legal... And I'm pretty sure it illegal to ship them across state lines, but I just want to check about that part...

I still dont know if its legal to ship them in california.

As long as they are native to that state it is legal. I remember there was a website that shipped field crickets, but only to certain states they were native too
. Id be willing to buy a few.

I thought that you couldnt ship the grass hoppers no matter what across state lines because its a pest?

Hornworms are pests, snails are pests, and katydids are pests, but as long as that species is native to the state its being shipped to it is legal

Poop. I couldnt find any today. I did fing some other kinds that had light yellow/green wings with a black stripe on them that have that same mottled look... any idea what it is?

I have shipped grasshoppers in state before from my families old ranch. One thing your going to have to be careful about is when feeding off wild insects their is always the problem of parasites.

You may just want to use them as brood stock and start a captive colony.

I'll do! Is spharagemon bolli safe to feed? I thought the ones I found today were spharagemon collare, but apparently their range doesn't extend to California...

Grasshoppers are great to feed out with the exception of Lubber grasshoppers that are toxic/poisonous. The problem is they could harbor parasites and is something I'm looking into presently for a couple of species here in California.

Never mind they aren't bolli either! I'm having a hard time figuring out what these are...

I feed hoppers off ALL the time and have never had a problem.

I was the same way until now. I have fed out wild hoppers for years and was treating Rhino my Parsons to a diet of a couple kinds of grasshoppers and mantis for the summer and low and behold I think he has got parasites. Went to the vet this week and they said they thought the fecal was contaminated and am going to give them another fecal check ASAP.

Guess there is always some kind of risk.

Okay, is it even legal to sell them or only ship them? Because... I didn't think of that... Like making a profit off of a native species?

Anywho, found two more species and a few carolinas (which I could not catch.) Working on the ID for the other two as we speak. Have a decent amount of Pallidipennis females who hopefully will lay some eggpod things soon. Found a mantis, I think this one is the california mantis. Couldn't find a chinese mantis.

I have a whole new respect for chameleons who leaf walk... my net's handle broke and I only had a stub and the net part, so I had to leaf walk really close to the insects and catch them while I was litterally just a few inches away. You need a lot of muscle control to not go too fast, fall over off/down the hill, and to not step into those really thorny bushes while still getting close to the bugs! This way did yeild more catches than any other way I have tried so far. Smart chameleons :)
