She's digging!!

I'm so nervous and freaked out! I just went to look where my cham was to see if I could give her some crickets, and she's about 5 inches in a hole in the sand! I ran away before she could see me looking (i hope)

I'm worried, because it's not 12 inches of sand due to size restraints, but OH GOD IT'S HAPPENING.

someone hold my hand!

XD

I think all of are here to hold your hand, just chill, relax, and if you need something deeper, empty out and clean a trash can, throw soil/sand in it (like the one you have :p) and put her in... so long as you have some space at the top so she can't climb out, she'll be fine :)

I can't! I can't do anything to help her, because she HATES HANDLING.

What if I ruined everything for her???

Calm down! Everything will be OK!!!!!!!!!!!! Just forget about it, watch a show, and check on her in an hour and a half or so. Is this an infertile clutch?

Yes, it's infertile, she's never been with a male.

Do they ever dig just for fun? Is this the real deal?

Breathe... count down backwards from 10.

then stop worrying about it! They sometimes dig a test hole... dont like it, cover it up then try again. It takes hours, so be patient!

:p

Sometimes they dig many test holes before actually digging the one they like. I know this will drive you crazy, but you just need to make sure you leave her alone, and let her do her thing.

*hands ya a drink* calm down. Calm down. I very much doubt you "ruined" anything, and I bet she is (in her own way) thankful for the dirt she has. Now take a deep breath and have a drink :p

Thanks all. I don't think I ruined anything yet, but if I had to pick her up and put her in a bigger container, I am worried she'd hold a grudge and her clutch. Not to mention, I only had the sand to set up one laying bin.

I picked her up once to put her in her new enclosure and it didn't go smoothly. She hates hands, and hisses and lunges if they are anywhere near her.

Maybe in the future you can build a little ladder thing that leads down to a bigger bucket from her viv so she can have more digging space and so you don't worry as much? If you take some 12 gauge wire or so and attach it to the ladder so it forms 'ribs' you could screen it too for your peace of mind!

wow, maybe one day I will have the space for that! But I currently live in a small bedroom, and there's cats.

I was trying to think of ways to incorporate her older, small 30ish gallon flexarium and combine it with her 65, but I am not very handy. I would LOVE to have her free range, some day!

How often do they lay?

the laying ... I don't know T_T however... it's really not that hard (if it's a screen sided tank at least) to cut out part of the screen and just stitch them together with some plastic thread (beading thread comes in plastic, is typically white and you can leave the ends outside of the connection so she can't get to them) so she has a hole to travel to the smaller one if she feels the need to, just put a vine through it for her :) Just make sure you keep the zipper opening accessible in case you NEED to have access to her!

O, and if you need to, you could just cut a flap out of each so you can sew it up again in case you need to use either of them separately!

that sounds like a great idea! I'll think about it more!

I can't hear her digging anymore... I'm afraid to go look.

How close is it to lights out for her? I know some chams dig until a bit past lights out... so maybe she's just taken a short break, or is filling in her old hole to start a new one...

Lights are out at 1130, I think. It's only 630 now.

I peeked very briefly and could only see her crest peeking out of the hole, so she has turned around and is chilling in there...

Wouldn't it be great if she's already laying? :D

Yes, then you could relax! Were I you, I'd check on her (more than a peek) after the lights are out... you'll be less likely to bother her that way

yes it would but she still needs to cover them. She will go back up her vines and be skinny and very dirty. Give her a drink a good one. Careful about feeding her tonight if close to lights out since it will not be warm enough for digestion but feed her first thing in the morning with some extra feeders and extra calcium.

She will be hungry and the eggs took a lot of Calcium. You are doing great just let her do her thing :)

my female veiled who is about a foot long, maybe more like 14 inches long, laid 53 infertile eggs in a 6 inch deep cooler. you probably have nothing to worry about
