shedding for 2 weeks and still going!

So we have had our little veiled for about 7 weeks now. She had little patches of shed stuck on her when we got her and I thought it would just come off with her next shed. She started to shed about 2 weeks ago but has only shed her head and one foot. I think a couple of new patches appeared on her back but nothing has come off.

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care? Femal veiled, not sure on age but think about 5ish months as she still looks young but is quite big (8ish inches snout to vent) we have had her for 7 weeks
Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon? we have never handled her as she is a scaredy cat
Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders? She gets 5 or 6 crickets at lunch and 5 locusts or 2 silkworms at dinner time. The crickets are gutloaded with fresh carrot, apple and leafy greens and dry gutload made from a sandrachameleon recipe. The locusts are offered the same food but are not so interested. The silkworms eat mulberry chow. Got some bug burger yesterday to try out. She grazes on kale and occasional fruit like strawberry or bell pepper
Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule? Use exo terra plain calcium on the crickets every day at lunch time and komodo calcium with d3 and multivit every 2 weeks
Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking? a hand pump spray bottle about 6+ tiems a day for a few minutes, sometimes longer if she's having a big drink.n I see her drink more than once every day directly from the spray bottle.
Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites? white urates of a good size and smooth brown poo. She has not been tested for parasites in our care.
History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you. The pet shop did not give an exact age but was told around 3 mobnths when we got her but she is pretty big so I think she is maybe older

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions? Reptibreeze 2x2x4 foot tank
Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?lights are on 9am to 9pm. Arcadia t5 12%uvb and a 60w housr bulb for basking.
Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps? basking spot is 80-84 f and bottom is 65-70 f measured with a laser thermo gun
Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity? humidity ranges from 40 to 60 tested with digital hygrometer and a dial in there all the time. The whole enclosure gets sprayed and there is a shower curtain at the back.
Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind? We have a ficus, a palm plant and a yukka type dracanea
Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor? The tank is in the living room on a table which brings the top up to 6 feet off the ground, well above eye level when sitting on the sofa. not a lot of traffic but my daughter is always on the sofa infront of the tv! It doesn't seem to bother our cham as she just goes about her business.
Location - Where are you geographically located? We are in the Shetland Isles at the noth of scotland, uk

Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned aboutShe had little patches of shed on her back when we got her 7 weeks ago. She has had a shed since but has only patially shed (one foot and head and veil) but she still has the original shed on her and has not shed from her body or other feet. We have been giving her extra mists and using warm water to try help lift the skin. Although she seems to enjoy being misted it has done nothing to help. She does not have any around her toes or tail so I am not worried about any cutting her circulation off.

Could this be due to a lack of a certain vitamin? Am I not feeding her enough? I have heard of shedding aid oil but she is far too scared of us so I dont thin kwe would be able to apply it to her skin. I am not willing to upset or stress her with this process unless it is absolutely necessary

There is a reptile vet on the island and we are registered there so we will take her to the vet if need be.

Any advice would be great ! Thanks guys :)

no! lol! I can't ppick her up! we can take photos of her with the screen door shut but if we open the door she slants herself sideways so we can't get a good pic :(

At work just now so will try to get something in a photo to compare size when I get home.

If shes 8 inches snout to vent, she is not a baby. more likely an adult.

in which case, they are always in a constant state of shed.

See thats what I'm thinking! 8 inches is a guesstimate so will try to get a proper measurement.

The only thing that makes me think that she is still young is how she looks. She has got a good little belly on her but her body is not as tall as most adults I have sen and she also has no colouring or patterns ( but I know she might never get colours)

Here are some photos I had on my phone already

Well females dont get patterns like the males do.

and my female didnt get any coloring until she bred.

She looks older than 5 months.

So like i said, they can always be in a constant state of shed.

babies do a full body shed, but adults shed body parts.

But is it normal to have the same shed patches for 7 weeks without them coming off? I would have thought they would come off and be replaced by new ones?

Also I realise girls don't get the colours like males but they do get a little bit yes? Most pics I've seen they have tiny blue and sometimes yellow/orange splotches.

Does anyone else think she looks adult? And can anyone comment on the amount of food she gets please? See its difficult to decide how much to give since we don't know how old she is.

I think it's time to cut back on her food. Kinyongia wrote an excellent blog post on keeping females so you can minimize how often they carry eggs and how many eggs they carry. Obviously, minimizing egg production can help extend their lives.

Thank you for the link :)

I have read jannb's blog on how to keep females and they both have some great info! The only reason we haven't cut back on her food is we don't know how old she is and if she is young and just a big 'un, we don't want to under feed her. It's frustrating not knowing how old she is

Also we do keep her temps in the low 80's already because anything higher makes her too hot.

She is definately over 6 months, probably more like 8 - 10 months and could have or getting ready to have an infertile clutch. She is pretty fat. I would get a laying bin in her cage just in case. She looks like she is about 4" or more snout to vent.

Cut back her food to 5 adult size crickets every other day. You can give her other feeders, but cut back on her crickets by 1 or 2 depending on what you are giving her. Keep her temps no hotter then 85 or so so she doesn't develop a huge clutch. When you are sure she has eggs, she will need a little extra calcium to help replace what she is losing from her bones. Read Jann's blog for that information.

That's very useful to know! I'm Angie's bf. I'd guess Teal'c is about 5-6" snout to vent.

So irritating that we were mislead by the pet shop about her age. They also gave us a mercury vapour bulb with a thermostat. Of course mercury vapour bulbs don't work with any thermostat :/. No longer using it anyway.

Temps are a constant 80F during the day. We have a laying bin (1ftx1x1), just looking for some play sand to fill it. Will get that tomorrow. Now that we hear from you that you think she's older we'll immediately cut down on feeders (mix of crickets, locusts, silkworm, kale and strawberries ATM :))

We really appreciate all your advice! Thank you.

Is the 80 degrees at the basking spot? Ideally you will have a temperature range so she can move about to cool down or heat up.

Play sand can usually be found at Wal Mart, Home Depot or Lowes. You might want to call ahead and ask if they have it in stock. It would be in the garden department.

Yes it's 80 at the basking spot. It goes down to 65-70 at the very bottom of the tank. She has plenty of range for her temps and a couple of different places to bask so no worries there.

We live on a small island in the north of Scotland :) we are getting play sand from the DIY shop tomorrow.

Is it ok to give her any kale or anything on the days that she has no insects? I feel mega guilty about not feeding her for a day :(

Well guys you were bang on with her being older! She has just started to get orange patches and a few blue stripes so I guess that's her reaching maturity!

Thank you for all the advice and letting me know she was older. Luckily we started to cut down on her food when you told me and hopefully we will be able to hold off in the egg laying! :)

P. s. just in case you start to panic, we have and will continue to have her bin set up ;)

sorry if we ignored you a little....you can certainly feed her greens. There's no reason to feel guilty about not feeding them, they aren't like us, they don't get hungry 3 times a day. But if you want to put some Kale in on "non-feeder" days, that would be fine. The greens will help keep her hydrated too.
