Several concerns..

Hi. I'm new to "Chameleon Forums". My son purchased a Chameleon from a previous owner. "Lilly" is believed to be about 20 months old. When the previous owner purchased her (from a pet store) she was pregnant. She had a clutch of 10 eggs.. Two survived. We have had her fror about 4 months. We noticed several concerns.
1. She doesn't use her tounge correctly. It hardly shoots out, and is very slow. the past two-three days, she doesnt even stick her tounge out. We are kind of force feeding her. (she ate a lrg cricket and a super worm).
2. We think she may be getting ready to deliver a clutch. She has been very motionless (not moving much). Her color is great. She has had a nesting box in her cage for about two month, we found her at the bottom (not in the nesting box) a couple of times. Yesterday we found her in the nesting box, but we though she fell. She was not actively digging, but rather just looked like she was laying there. After about 10 hours, we picked her up and showered her and put her on her stick. She hasn't tried to go to the bottom again.????
3. One of her feet (back right) looks like it may be a little swollen (not the leg, but the claw). She is favoring it, by haning her leg alot and not clutching with that foot?????
4. Her neck is swollen.. We know that this could be a lack of or to much of calcium, uvb, etc... What exactly can we do to help her.
5. We have never see her drink from leaves or misting. Rather we feed her water through a medicine dripper. We offer this to her several times a day (about 8) along with misting (3-4 times a day)

is there anyone out there that is willing to talk to us about her issues? We can exchange e-mails/phone numbers?

HELP!!!!

First of all...I'm not a vet and whatever I say comes from experience or from what I've read or heard.

You said..."She doesn't use her tounge correctly. It hardly shoots out, and is very slow. the past two-three days, she doesnt even stick her tounge out. We are kind of force feeding her. (she ate a lrg cricket and a super worm)"...tongue issues can be from calcium imbalances, injury and maybe even dehydration.

You said..."We think she may be getting ready to deliver a clutch"...if she had no leftover sperm this would be very likely. The last clutch was very small...but if she had retained eggs from it I would have expected her to have been in trouble before now.

You said..."She has been very motionless (not moving much). She hasn't tried to go to the bottom again.????"...it bothers me that she is not moving much and that she just stayed in the nesting box without digging or trying to get out.

You said..."One of her feet (back right) looks like it may be a little swollen (not the leg, but the claw). She is favoring it, by haning her leg alot and not clutching with that foot?????"...sounds like it could be infected.

You said..."Her neck is swollen.. We know that this could be a lack of or to much of calcium, uvb, etc"...edema should be from either retained fluids or seems to be caused by overdoing certain vitamins...I don't think calcium or UVB issues would cause it.

You said..."We have never see her drink from leaves or misting. Rather we feed her water through a medicine dripper. We offer this to her several times a day (about 8) along with misting (3-4 times a day)"...are the urates white or do they have quite a bit of orange in them?

Can you post some pictures and fill out the questionaire...

I really think she should go to a vet.

That site has a lot of information....but quite a bit of it is not detailed enough or incorrect....for instance (just a couple of examples)...
It says..."I use a two-in-one (calcium and multivitamin) called Minerall"....minerall is minerals, not vitamins.

It says..."Introduce your chameleon to an adult sized aquarium right away. When you accessorize the enclosure, only accessorize a portion of it"...no mention that the UVB light needs to be close enough to do the chameleon good.

It recommends calcium sands for a substrate even though these have been proven to cause impactions.

It recommends a basking temperature of 90F without mentioning that this is too hot for hatchlings and some species of chameleon.

It mentions absorbing water through the skin...which I don't believe has ever been proven yet.

Correct, but things like Identifying and Preventing
Common Medical Problems is spot on with it.
The link is useless if you are confirming it is misinformed. You should tell users that it is grossly misinformed before providing it, if that is what you think.
There are many repercussions to that action that need to be thought about before providing the knowledge. What if the user read the link and never bothers to come back to read the rest of the posts.

I am not saying this happened, but it is a likely situation and should be avoided.

I'm sorry, but IMHO even these are lacking detail and not entirely correct...

For instance...constipation/impaction can be caused from many more things than ingesting an object. Temperatures that are too cold, overfeeding can cause constipation too for instance.

Egg retention...although its true that inappropriate egglaying site is one of the main reasons for retaining eggs, the female can retain the eggs due to reproductive malformations, malformed/fused eggs, overfeeding, improper levels of calcium, etc.

The site just needs some work...but has some good information. The problem is that its hard for the "newbies" to sort it out.
