science project

My name is owen. I am 9 years old. I have a chameleon named moka. I am doing a science fair project and need volunteers who have chameleons. I am trying to see which eye chameleons use while looking for food. I am looking for volunteers to complete a short survey and provide observations of their chameleons. Please let me know if you can help and I can give you more information on what I need.
:D

Owen, are you in fourth grade? I ask because I am a fourth-grade teacher, and most of my students are nine. Please tell your teacher that I am impressed that you have done your research to find this site, and that you are communicating so well with the members of this forum. Good job, Bud! I'll help you with whatever you need help with.

Also, let your teacher know that if she ever wants another classroom to Skype with or do blogging activities, she can reach me at [email protected].

Good luck with your project, and message me if you need any more help- but ask your parents first, because you should never message an adult without your parents' permission:)

Yeah, I'm in fourth grade. I am in science enrichment. You probably don't have
a Jackson chameleon. But if you do let me know. I go to school in Oa'hu, Sunset Beach Elementary.

Hello Owen Welcome to the forums. Im sure many memebers will be willing to help you out.
Let us know what kind of info you are looking for and Im sure you will get many replies.
Best of luck :)

I have a panther chameleon in my classroom, but there are others on the forum that have jacksons. I would think all chameleons use their eyes in the same way, but I'm not an expert. Nice job with science enrichment, I run that program in my school. We call it Envirothon here in PA.

breeding

I've had my chameleon for about a three quarters of a year, and I've had three other chameleons and I still don't know how to breed a jackson chameleon. Does any ofyou know how to breed a jackson chameleon? Please let me know.

Hello again Owen I am not too sure exactly what type of info you are looking for with their eyes but here is a breif description of what I see going on with my chams and others when they feed.

Chameleons can use both eyes to hunt prey and even process two different images at once, one from each eye.
Once a prey item has been located they will follow it with the eye on that side and then turn towards the prey and focus with both eyes to measure distance more accuratley using trianguluation.
They will often take a final look around their surroundings with one eye looking for preators, while watching the prey with the other eye right before they refocus and shoot.
When they pull back their tounges with prey attached they will close their eyes to protect them.

Hope that is helpfull be sure to post you questions.

Keep did a search on the Web and couldn't not find any studies that said the chameleon used one eye more than the other to search for prey.

Unlike other animals though they do have a negatively powered lens. (Don't know if that information will do you any good or not though.)

Here are a couple of sites that talk about the eyes...but you may need your teacher to help you understand what they are saying...

You could do a search on this forum...I seem to remember a thread that talked about them using one hand more than another...and I think it talked about eyes too.

You have definitely taken on a big project! Good luck with it!

what to do

It would be great if you could watch your chameleons while they are feeding.

Hi Owen,
I just sent an email to the address you provided, so as soon as I hear back I will complete the survey. I have also offered to provide some video of both my baby Panther chameleons as well as the adults eating. Whatever we can do to help you with your project just let us know.

Excellent choice for a science project too!!

My hypothesis is if my chameleon looks for prey with one eye more than the other, and looks for predators with the other eye, then it is showing brain lateralization for that task.
I would like you (as many people as possible) to chart their chameleons feeding events (whenever the chameleon strikes at food) for two weeks.
For each event, note which eye is being used to search for food right before
they focus both eyes on it to prepare for the strike. If you can't tell if they
use the left or right specifically(or use both eyes) mark that event as
undetermined.
I made a chart to keep track of this. If you wanted me to send it to you,
contact me at my mom's e-mail( on my first post) and I will send it to you.
Then you can just send it back to me after two weeks. Anyone that could do this thank you.

I'll give it a go.......and can you send me the other results when you're done with them so I can use them for my dissertation :D
I think it will mostly depend which way the cham is facing though, so be prepared to accept your null hypothesis...
