sand

As long as the sand stays moist it will hold the tunnel that she digs.

I always used bagged garden soil that I baked to kill anything that might be living in it. I filled a 55g garbage can with about 12"-15" of the baked soil that was moist enough when slightly packed it would not collapse when I dug a deep narrow hole. This worked well for the 10 or so egg laying species I've worked with.

Egg Laying Mixture

I use half play sand and half organic potting soil with enough water to clump together but not too much where I can squeeze water from it. Again as others stated I do not want the test hole collapsing in on her.

How long do you bake the garden soil for and at what temperature. I would assume a fairly low temp of 200F to 250F. I think that is a good idea since I have heard about nematodes destroying egg in some other threads.
