Salmonella

I am just wondering, has anyone ever contracted salmonella from a chameleon? I know that some chameleons do carry it, and it is the only thing that makes me hesitate to let my chameleon free range. I don't see many people worrying about it, which is why I was wondering. Correct me if I'm wrong about it.

Chameleons rarely ever have salmomonela. I’ve been keeping a long time and my daughter before me and never heard of a chameleon with salmonella. I ask my vet about it years ago and he said it was so rare that I didn’t need to worry about it. I have always free ranged,

Salmonella is more likely to be picked up off an amphibian or an aquatic herp. Unless their water is constantly filtered and sterilized, they are always coated with their own bacteria to some degree. Technically, any herp can be a carrier. I don't worry about it, but then I don't have kids or immuno-compromised people visiting me either. After I clean cages or handle poop I wash my hands....good practice no matter what.
