Chameleon Info:

Your Chameleon - Male Veiled Chameleon. Approx. 1 year 5 months. Has been in my care for about 6 or 7 months.

Handling - Handled about 3 times per day since sick (to feed and give eye drops). Before sick, around once every few days.

Feeding - Crickets (around 5-8 per day), horn worms (1/2 per day (usually as a treat)), Super worms (2-3 per day) various fruits randomly. Usually fed at the end of the day, but otherwise just randomly when i get home from a class. Since sick he has been eating 3-5 crickets per day, carrots and lettuce randomly. Crickets fed with regular cricket pellets and Fluker's cricket food (jelly).

Supplements - Fluker's Calcium with Vit. D and Exoterra Multivitamin. Dusted crickets usually every other feed session. Since sick they have always been dusted.

Watering - Cup on top of cage dripping. Showers usually once a day since he has been sick. Humidifier in the room. Spray bottled cage 3x a day for about 20-30 seconds each time. Cham is drinking.

Fecal Description - Usually healthy looking (brown, slightly wet). Noticeably fewer droppings on the bottom of the cage than usual since he has been sick. Never tested for parasites.

History - Bought from Petsmart 6-7 months ago. Has had no health issues before this one except some small eye problems which were fixed in the same day with a couple of reptile eye drops.

Cage Info:

Cage Type - Screen cage about 27" wide, 15" long and 3 feet high. Placed on top of a table. (the top of the cage is higher than 6ft in the air).

Lighting - Exoterra UVB100, Exoterra Sun Glo (50W), Exoterra Heat Glo (50W) (Infrared), Exoterra Night Glo (50W). UVB100 and Sun Glo turn on when we wake up (around 9 am), Night Glo is then turned off and the Heat Glo is always on.

Temperature - Temperature measured with Exoterra thermometer. Cage floor = 22-24c (71-75F). Basking Spot = 30-32C (87-90F). Overnight = 20-21C (68-69F).

Humidity - 30-50% all the time with humidifier in the room. Measured with exoterra hygrometer.

Plants - Used to have a smallish (1ft high) umbrella plant at the bottom of the cage but it died recently.

Placement - Small bedroom by himself. Not near any fans, air vents or high traffic areas. Cage placed on top of a dresser so that the top of the cage is higher than 6ft.

Location - Ontario, Canada

Current Problem - I moved from university to my house for the winter break and brought home my cham. He stayed in a very cold room when he was moved back home and was right beside a sliding door that would be opened once a night to let the dog out, as well as several times per day. Since having him in the room he developed an eye problem and became lethargic, stopped eating and began sleeping during the day sometimes.

When we noticed the eye problem and his strange behaviour we moved him into a much warmer room, bought a humidifier and gave him the Reptile eye drops 3x per day, as well as a shower every day, or other day. He has been eating (with us making him open his mouth) every day. We recently added lettuce and carrots to give him some Vit. A which we believe is deficient in his diet, and therefore causing the problem, along with the cold temperatures. He has had his eyes closed for more than a week now. He has no other injuries, his colours are all normal and he is just as strong as he used to be. He is not throwing up either. What could be causing him this eye problem, and what more can we do to fix it?

Above is a link to the image album. Let me know if it doesn't work.

I'm sorry to see that Russell's having eye problems. It could have something to do with all the lights that you use. I have never used any of those but it looks like way to much to me. I'd move him to a warmer spot and add more plant to his cage also.

Thanks for the reply, Ive left the UVB and the Heat Glo lamp right now. I left the heat lamp just to give the cage a bit more warmth. I cant really move him into a warmer room... When i walk in there its pretty hot as it is at around 23-24C

Maybe instead of the red light you could use a ceramic heat emitter. They give off heat without using light, so it could be used at night without disturbing his sleep. Hope Russell feels better, and you find out what's bothering him.
