Rubbing eye on branches

I got my first panther chameleon yesterday and for a while now including at the shop he has been rubbing his left eye against branches, i was told the light that was put in his viv caused an issue with his eye but it healed up fine and hes shed fine since. Is it worth a trip to the vets or am i just worrying too much? Doesnt affect his sight from what I can tell as he doesnt miss any of his food and is a little greedy guts. Thanks in advance

At times they will do this because there is a little debris or stuck shed and it is normal. If it continues you may want to see a reptile vet as a precaution, but often a nice warm mist will flush anything out. Just keep a close eye on it and watch for any changes.

image.jpg not a great pic but the best I could get as hes fairly scared at the moment

I can't see anything unusual from that picture. I would just keep watch and if the rubbing continues or you see the eye swelling you may need to have it flushed out to remove the debris. If you start seeing any discharge from it you should see a vet quickly.

My chameleon occasionally will scratch his eyes and head on a branch (usually his eye). Sometimes he'll even use his hind leg to scratch his head like a canine, but that is usually when a drop of water falls on his head or he's trying to get dead skin off. Scratching or rubbing their eyes on branches is normal as long as it is not super consistent and you don't see anything unusual on his eye. It might be nice to go see a vet in the future just for a check up but I think you'll be fine. Just watch for anything else out of the ordinary, but I'd say there's nothing to worry about.

Brilliant thank you! Apart from the rubbing eyes hes been fine he eats and is hydrated although havent seem him drink since hes been home but he is a bit freaked out about being in such a big viv! But i will keep an eye on him and see a vet if need be! Thanks! :)

Also his last shed was on the 6th july would it be possible for him to be going in to shed again already due to enclosure size change as he has white skin, looks like shed on his eyes which is where he started shedding last time could also explain the rubbing, he hasnt gone a pale colour but he didnt really last time either

A good way to monitor his hydration is to keep an eye on his urates in his poo. Nice bright white = good hydration. Orange tint to the urates = dehydrated. Multiple mistings and a dripper should give him the humidity needed and opportunities to drink even if he's shy and you don't see him drink.

There's a great thread on Poop 101 that is very informative, educational, and fun if you are like me. poop talk makes me giggle. :D
