This past saturday I got the greatest deal possible on this 1 year old vieled off of craigslist. I receieved everything for under 100$. the aluminum cage, 3 lamps, a ton of combo pack bulbs(not the ones with uvbs) and crickets with all there food and water. But heres the thing that has me wondering I asked if they had any UVB bulbs and they said no we never used it. Is it possible for a cham to live a whole year without it? Since ive gotten the cham Ive been using my spare UVB from other chameleon and he is always basking under it. Im assuming he's enjoying the uvb rays becuase he never had that light before. And I have a question about his coloring while he is awake he is dark color no matter what if anyone is his presence or not as you can see from the pic but while he is sleeping he's a nice bright green. Is this happening because he's not use too the new environment? Im not too sure about the nature of vields becuase this is my first one. Any answers or feedback would me greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome! They had to have had him exposed to uvb, either outside if not inside. They could possibly live without uvb for a long period but most likely would have severe MBD(metabolic bone disease) His limbs would look very curvy and they do not. He does look thin and his casque(conehead as you call it) looks very sunk in. As far as being dark, often times they will show colors like that when stressed and most likely he is from being in a change of environment. Chameleons always display some of their most beautiful colors at night when they are asleep!

Veileds tend to turn their colors darker, usually black, to absorb more light in order to raise their temp. If one side of his body is darker, maybe the side not in direct light is not, it's probably for this. If they get stressed they will get dark spots and lines instead of a more evenly spread out darkness to his skin. The stressed out look actually looks pretty in it's own way. Check out youtube videos of veileds hissing, and you'll be able to get a good idea if this darkening is from stress or light absorbtion.
