If I were you I'd just buy small dubia roaches and say they are potato bugs hahaha. When I was younger I wasn't even allowed to keep reptiles because my step dad thought they were all creepy and dangerous. It's funny because now he LOVES my boys, whenever I visit he asks if they are coming too! 
On another note, have you tried giving him fruit or vegetables?
I know many chams won't touch them but its worth a try. My little panther will go NUTS! Is he sees fruits or veggies and will all buy practically jump on my hand to get them. My veiled is more of a secret eater when it comes to fruit/ veggies. Ill leave them in a bowl before work and when I get home they are gone.
