Retained Shed Problem

Tommy has a LOT of retained shed on the top of his casque. I believe this goes right back to his last keeper, who didn't mist him. As a result he has a thick layer of shed built up down the front of his casque. I have now had him for 10 months and it is finally starting to lift off as you can see in the pics. I have been bathing it and make sure that I always mist him during misting sessions - this is easy as he loves being misted! Is there anything I can put on (cream or such like) that will help remove this easier for him? I really don't want him to snag it on a branch and rip it off at this stage! Yes he did. Part of his right lobe came off with some shed, poor boy. That's looking much better now though!
