Rest In Peace

It saddens me to say that Xander passed away tonight. My girlfriend and I took him to see a vet yesterday morning, and we were given vitamins and antibiotics to squirt into his mouth. We had to do it with a syringe. He wouldn't eat anything. He wouldn't even open his eyes. The vet told us there was a pretty good chance that he would recover back to full health. She just said it would take a while. We definitely weren't expecting this. Especially so soon.

We bought Xander from PetSmart about a month ago. He was our first chameleon we had ever seen in person. We fell in love right when we saw him. The employee helping us said he was a pet for people who had experience with reptiles, and wasn't exactly easy to take care of. Hearing this, we wanted to make sure everything was perfect for the little guy. So we bought all the necessities and eventually we felt like we had a perfect setup. Every time I thought something might be wrong, or I wasn't for sure about something, I would post a thread on here seeking advice, and I always got it.

I can't be sure what made Xander sick. After his visit with the vet, I did a thorough 'cage inspection'. In the trey that the potted plant was sitting in, there was about three inches of disgusting water with tons of dead crickets floating around. It smelled like death itself. Immediately, I got the standing water out of the cage, and made a draining system so all the water from the plant and misting goes straight out of the cage. I thought that gross water had to be the cause of illness. I felt like an idiot for never checking to see if water might have built up over the month he was in our care. But after seeing what a few people had to say on here, I'm wondering if he was already sick before we bought him. I know that pet shops are notorious for not caring for their pets. Maybe it just now got really bad to where we noticed it..?

Having my first chameleon die after a month of having him is a huge discouragement. My girlfriend and I got a veiled(Zozo) just a couple weeks after getting Xander. He's only a couple months old, and is doing great in his new home. Hopefully, he will stay healthy. I'll do my best to make improvements with my husbandry and overall care.
If all goes well with Zozo, I plan on getting a panther, considering I have everything I need for another chameleon.

I'm sorry about rambling on guys, just getting it all out!
R.I.P. Xander!!

I'm so sorry about Xander. :( just know that you did what you could and he spent his last little bit with people who cared for him. RIP Xander :(

Sorry for you lose.. I'm new with chams too and i worry about if im doing the right thing or feeding the right stuff to my veiled Greengo, so hang in there and you be alright...:)

I am so very sorry for your loss....I have my first cham now for a little over a month and he is doing great, but I worry every day if I am doing anything wrong....I'm sure you did all the right things and sometimes these bad things just happen.....RIP Xander.

I am sorry you lost Xander. It may well have been from the time at petsmart. All you can do is what you are doing, make sure things go well with Zozo.

I moved this for you to the section where we say good bye to our loved little guys.

Sorry you lost your cham and more than likely he was ill when you got him. You did the best you could. Sometimes things are just out of our control. I am glad you got another chameleon and I hope he lives a long and healthy life with you.

I am so sorry to hear about Xander. My first chameleon was sick when I got him, and he only lasted 10 days. It is hard , but just know that you did all you could to keep him happy and healthy. I would think he was sick when you got him. I am glad that you have Zozo. Having another to care for can make it easier, though I know nothing will ever replace your first cham. Hang in there and good luck with Zozo!!

Sorry to hear about your loss. If possible, it is a good idea to get a fecal exam done for Zozo just to be safe. Things do not always show up until sometimes it is too late. It will give you piece of mind that you are doing all you can for your little veiled.

Sorry for your loss. I got my veiled from a pet shop without prior research & a lot of what they told me turned out to be wrong. I've been back numerous occasions since then & seen chameleons looking sick & thin...unfortunately, pet shops don't have the best reputation. Sounds like your baby was sick when you got her, which is challenging even for hardened keepers. Jacksons are also known to be more sensitive, not great starter chams. You did your best by going to the vets & seeking advice here.

Chameleon ownership is a one long learning curve, I've been on it for 6 months & I'm only at the beginning! Your veiled is lucky, he has dedicated owners. :)

Oh man, I was really hoping he was going to pull through for you.:(
As Laurie said, who knows when the illness began.
You did right by him, taking him to the vet as you did.
May your heart heal soon!
