reptisun question

Ok so i see that most use the reptisun 5.0 i have a spare reptisun 10.0 on hand that i was going to use for our set up. Is that too much? i have only had Stickers for 1 day so i have not set up the regular cage yet ( hubby is building the cage this weekend ) stickers is in a small set up for the time being. He gets to spend all day in a screened in area with lots of sunshine and plants just for him. ( it is a small screened in area off my bedroom escape proof and chameleon proof) and he is in a small screen cage at night. thanks

I personally use 10.0s Most people use 5.0s, and recommend them. The breeder I got my panther from told me to use the 10 though. And I got the 10.0 strictly because I was told too but when I actually thought about it, it makes sense to me.

A pretty significant amount of UVB is lost through the mesh cage, and the bulbs start to weaken after some use.. and considering both factors a 10.0, really stays at about a 5.0 for longer than an actual 5.0 does.

Read this: http://www.chameleonsonly.com/index.php?p=page&page_id=Light/Heat This was taken from Kammerflage Kreations webpage on lighting. They are a sight sponsor and have been selling chameleons for I think they said 32 years. I am not sure where they got this info from. I bought my cham from them and have been meaning to email them as this topic came up once before. It is really for you to decide. I personally use the 5.0's but my chameleons get out in the sun every day also.

Funny you should mention that because the first thing I did when I got my UV Solarmeter was test my bulbs. I have Reptisun 18'' tubes and Arcadia (from the UK) bulbs and fixtures, both are suposed to be 5%.

The reading I got from the Reptisun bulb was 5% without the black screen of the cage, and 3% with the screen.

The Arcadia bulb was 8% both with and without the screen!
So the screen didnt filter any UV from Arcadia.
I also noticed that the Arcadia tube is a lot brighter then the Reptisun.

My veiled cham loves his Arcadia tube. The first time I ever saw him color up, flatten his body like a pancake, and lay on one side, then the other, like a person getting a tan.
He never did that when I had the Reptisun on him

I thought that was very interesting

Hmmmm, where would one acquire said bulb? Interesting...

I just took my Panther to the vet because of a closed eye. The vet said that Panthers require more UV then Veileds and the output should be at least 50. She said at least 50 UV and that I should be using a 10 for all my Panthers. Thankfully I have a meter, but then I have many chams so it is pretty much a given that I have a meter. Another thing she said is that Panthers require water, water, water so I am getting a Reptimist and modifying it to mist 4 cages and putting it on a timer. All my Panther cages will have drippers and will still get sprayed. The ones that currently have drippers I notice, is there favorite spot to bask. So, I am changing around my setups. I figure since I have removed my guys from their natural environment the least I could do is give them back something similar to what they would have in the wild.

I guess to each his own, but my vet is an exotic vet and is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to herps and has been most helpful in filling in those spots of knowledge that I am lacking.

Just a little FYI - take it or leave it.

i am going to the vet at 12:00 with Sticky ( if it is a girl a name change wil be in order LOL) but anyway I am hoping to get all the answers i need about this little guy.

I know each one requires different lighting and i am bringing my reptisun to see what the output is and to see if it is too much for the little guy.
Also need to find out what temp i need to have it for basking.
Oh so different then my dragon LOL and Rango was much easier cause i knew what he liked and could tell his moods. Sticky is not showing much either way

What is a Reptimist? I assume your not talking about the shedding liquid.

I always reccomend a 10.0 for any cham and I personally use the arcadia 12% T5 and reflector on my veiled and panther. I dont think panthers require more uv I think both require in the 50 range.

I am always willing to stick to a way thats worked but I feel there is so much new technology coming out which can greatly benefit us and our animals. I am lucky enough to be in regular contact with the bulb makers and the person who actually designs them here in the UK and the response I got was to use the above setup with a screen cage.

I am still awaiting a reply from Kammerflage. I mean they state that a 10.0 can KILL your chameleon. That is a pretty strong statement!

It could be a problem on a free range, or if it was IN the cage. But people use 5.0's in FR or caged cages normally, right? To me upping the UVB makes sense if it's going to be lost to mesh.

But then again, I don't really know. Just makes sense to me.
