reptariums

Reptariums have their drawbacks, but they work just fine. They can block UVB a little more so you may want to use a 10.0 instead of a 5.0. They also have flimsy plastic bottom drainage/tray things. If you dont like those you can buy a piece of acrylic/plexiglass and cut it to size and drill some holes so you can have a hard bottom instead of the flimsy one. Also, be gentle with the zipper (some people have problems with theirs, but one of mine is 11 years old and I still use it just fine.) They are very helpful when you need cheap cages or have a shy chameleon. They also hold humidity better than aluminum screen cages.

If you want a large aluminum cage, get an LLL cage and the cage extension. The LLL ones are sturdier and dont rust like the zoomed ones.

Since Im a believer of raining water on my chams instead of misting them, I like the reptariums cause they drain so well. BUT, I do like the door on standard aluminum ones to.....Took me awhile.....to get used to the zippers on the reptariums.

Some of us do, particularly with montane species and pygmies. Screen is easier to use in may parts if the US because of the weather and other conditions. Plus, glass terrariums can't be put outside in warmer weather like a screen enclosures can. And drainage can be difficult if the keeper/animal prefers long mistings.

It's mostly a preferance and price thing.

I'm not sure if any commercial brand aluminum screen cages go bigger (except lll reptiles 2x2x4 cage with the 2 foot extension to make it 6 feet tall, but i dont know what shipping would be like since you aren't in the US.) if you want aluminum, you might have to have one custom made otherwise.

Oh, when you said how you, "didnt know why americans never use these," and "used over there with success," since protean cages are from America, I assumed you were in a different country.

haha sorry no no i noticed that europe uses all glass while everyone here thinks its terrible and bad

We dont think its all bad....just "aquarium" style tanks that are bad.....the protean has a subfloor vent, like the exo terra/zoomed terrariums do.
There usage was covered in several threads over the past couple of years.

That protean is WAY overpriced...IMO....I know how much glass costs wholesale(their price)....and thats just to much money they are asking......

As long as theres a bottom vent to draw air in , its all good for alot of species...

I called a local glass company and i got a good deal on the supplies to make this at home, about 200 bucks, and that is for the huge protean, the biggest one (450$) that doesnt include the aquarium silicone, but thats cheap. Only problem i see is idk how to make door hinges.. ill research it, any ideas?

You can get the glue on type.....or measure and take to glass shop and they can drill holes where u need to install metal hinges...

the weight of the doors wont crack the glass?
How thick of glass did u get? If you were worried about cracking the glass, what made u get the glass in first place?

Done properly you shouldnt have a prob. as long as u got the right thickness of glass..
