Ok so storytime folks. I went to Petsmart the other day to finish up my set up: Supplements. I purchased Flukers cricket quencher with Calcium, Rep Herptivite, and here's th winner, rep-cal Calcium with Vit D. I asked the "reptile expert" if she had D3 fre Calcium, ad she strongly turned me down and told me I onl use calcium with D3 and only every other day. Now I've been on these forums for longer than day, but I remained quiet( I have no fear to cuss someone out so yeah shhhh) lol. My rant is being dissappointed in local "experts". Sooo now I don't have any Calcium, and little Reggies here(and cuter than ish!!! ). Hopefully pick some up in the nxt hour. Question, need a fast, money saver supplement seller, any recommendations?

I took the advice of a couple people here who suggested cuttlebone crushed up fine. I had a vision of me & a mortar & pestle (sp?). but after a trip to the store, I came home with a bag of broken cuttlebone for $1.98 ! they sell loose ones for .99 each. what a deal!
Then I got home & looked in my cupboard for a small grinder (which I had purchased used & never used) I broke them smaller & gave it a try. After a few seconds of "clunking" ( I was sure it wasn't gonna work) all of a sudden they went "poof" & disintegrated. I ran it for a bit to make sure there were no chunks & there is was... calcium powder!!
It did scuff up the inside of the grinder cup... no longer clear as glass. But now I had a use for it & didn't care.
It ground it up nice & fine & coats the crickets just like the store bought.

:D

Did you tell her that you were shopping for a chameleon? In her defense, it is true that most reptiles do just fine with (or actually need) calcium with D3; chameleons are very different from most other lizards.

It is unfortunate that there are tons of people out there giving poor advice, but that just reinforces the importance of doing your own research. :)

Don't you dare defen her! =P In all actuallity I brought up that it was for a Chameleon numorous times. I agree with you about the independant research 100%

depends on which calcium with d3. Different ones have different concentration of it. For instance repcal is one you would NOT want to give every other day.

Thank you^ =D It is Rep-cal, I gave him some today, and have a few extras dusted if he needs more tonight/ tomorrow, Calcium is orderd in the mail ad should arrivein the next few days. My hopefull guess is tha it shouldn't effect him if changed immediately following the mail. What makes me ponder is why they don't have Calcium without D3 at pet tores when the sell chameleons. Seems they are setting the customer up for failure. Glad I got little Reggie at FL Chams =D

He will be just fine with the calcium with D3 for a few days.

You're right - it makes no sense that many pet stores sell chameleons, but don't sell calcium without D3 (and a few other supplies they need). I actually brought this up at the pet store where I work when I got hired there a couple months ago, and my boss said I was absolutely right, she hadn't thought about that before, and we have requested to corporate to start stocking it. It's just difficult in a large chain pet store because suggestions have to go through so much red tape before anything actually changes. (It's not just corporate pet stores that have those problems though - I've yet to see calcium without D3 on the shelves at ANY pet store I've been to.) But things will get better - most pet stores just haven't caught up to the current husbandry trends with chameleons because they are such unique reptiles that require very specific care.

I think this is very true. Even reptile specialty stores are playing catch up when it comes to current husbandry. Just a few years ago when I got my first chameleon the reptile store sold me one jar of a vitamin/calcium supplement containing D3 and said to use it every day and it was all I would need. Now, I can get calcium without D3 at both the reptile store and a major, non-chain, pet store.
