R-Zill desert series for a chm?

So its never fun to break a $30 light bulb. Ecspecially when you have to replace it immediatly. Everyone has been saying to do a UVB strip light instead of the coil bulb. Even though it is SUPPOSED to be better than in the past, the UVB tubes are still highly reccomended, so maybe it was ment to be I broke my coil bulb..freak accident, while doing a weekly cage clean. So instantly I left and went to the pet store in search of another coil bulb, but their coil UVBs looked cheaply made, and smaller than the one I had. The UVB strips they had were only $20 more, but all they had were the "R-Zilla Desert series 50". I know it gives off a little more heat, but I went ahead and got it, and he seems to like to sit by it, so the additonal heat may have been a good choice. Does anyone have any reviews on the R-Zilla Desert series 50?The kid at the pet store did not seem to know anything about UVB and chameleons, and being how we have not seen the sun in about a month, I needed a light asap.

not a good choice. Those bulbs are too strong for chameleons and are made for beardies and stuff like that. Thats why they are called desert series. You may not notice the effects immediately and damage could be done to your chameleons eyes before it is too late. Get a reptisun or reptiglo tube 5,0 Those are the top recommeded bulbs.

Gosh, I do not know that answer to that. I would not want to tell you to put in the reptisun and have it get blown out by the fixture. Maybe someone else can chime in on that??? I know LLL reptile sells them. If you have no sun outside, it will not kill your chameleon to not have uvb for a few days. Make sure you have the basking lamp on though to keep him warm to digest his food.
 
so yeah this is going to be to much UVB. But I am wondering if I can keep the fixture and just put a repti-sun 5.0 bulb in it. MY cham is still fairly small, my cage is kind of big, and next to a window. so He does not go up towards the top of the cage much, and is at least a foot or two away from the light most if the day. My choices were limited, and needed something asap. I would not mind keeping the fixture if I can jusrt swap the bulb out.
 
thanks! yeah if someone could tell me if they have ever swapped out bulbs on this type of fixture, would appreciate it. Maybe if need be I can turn it on every other day or so for a few hours until I get a bulb I can go 12/12 with?
 
I just am not sure if I would risk that. I know the babies tend to hang upside down under the lights for what ever reason. Maybe if you raised it up off the screen? But I don't even know if it would be safe then. Chameleons eyes are so tempermental it seems. Me personally, I wouldnt chance it. I know different fixtures take different bulbs, like lamps when they tellyou not to exceed the wattage. Hopefully someone else will read this thread. It is a saturday afternoon, so you might not get many responses until later! i am in the middle of doing yardwork and coming in to cool off back and forth! Florida is still HOT!
 
yeah thats weird, these temps...Im in KY and its unsually cold this time of year, and dark. I already got the sweatshirts out. Supposed to frost tonight.

Oh well if nothing else maybe I can take the light back. From the post you linked, it seems the tropical series are not much better.
