Quick question?

Interesting, Is there a vegi-safe list somewhere that outlines what species Cham can eat what vegies/ fruits?

I read this from @kinyonga

Not many/all chameleons eat veggies, etc. but you can feed veileds greens (dandelions, collards, kale, endive, escarole, etc.) and veggies (carrots, squash, sweet potatoes, sweet red peppers, zucchini, etc.) and a small amount of fruit (pears, apple, melon, berries, etc.)

They can also eat non-toxic flowers and plant leaves.

I take any thick heavy stems out of the greens and either impale them on a branch or chop them up and put them in the dish with the rest of the "salad". For carrots, sweet potatoes, squash...I sliver the pieces or dice them into a size that would fit in the chameleon's mouth easily. I cut zucchini and peppers into strips. I put the whole "salad" into the lid (like the one from a peanut butter jar, for instance) on the floor of the cage.

Both hah, Panthers just eat bugs. Mine will occasionally gnaw on a branch, like a dog chewing a bone if that counts though.

Hey just making sure that chameleons can eat cantaloup? My guy loves it and I just wanna make sure it's good for him.

Seems like a lot of threads pop up based on common discussions, or as a spin off of current discussions. (y)

I did see recently that Chams can not taste. So what does that mean for comments like "My guy loves them" ? If they can't taste, how come they differentiate cantaloupe from say a light colored tomato? Do they SMELL their food? What's the attraction?

That is a great question... O definitely seems to have a preference on certain food. So how does she/they determine what she/they like?

Perhaps worthy of it's own thread? I always thought the movement of a bug attracts them, but how much moving does a piece of cantaloupe have?? lol

^^^^^^Well there you go. (y) They can taste, but not smell. So I wonder if their sense of taste is weak as well. Every try to eat something with your nose pinched shut? It doesn't taste the same! I wonder if a Chams taste buds compensate in some way for the lack of smell or if they perceive taste differently than we do. Maybe a cricket tastes like pancakes to them and fruit taste like mint. They have a preference perhaps??

Well my Parsons chameleon did not like cherry flavored antibiotics. I never saw a chameleon try to wipe it's tongue off on a branch before that.
Since chameleons would have the same sense of smell or should I say lack of it from birth I doubt if you can compare us holding our noses and smelling things differently when we do to their lack of ability to smell from birth I wards. I would imagine that a chameleons sense of smell and taste suit/serve a purpose to a chameleon the way ours suit us. Imagine how crazy we would be if we could suddenly smell as well as a dog can!
