Can a grow light be housed in just any normal container (like for a light bulb) or is there any specific knowledge i should be aware of?

You want to know if a grow light can be put in any light fixture correct?
Yes as long as the bulb type is appropriate for the fixture and is rated for the wattage of the bulb.
IE Fluorescent T5 bulb needs a T5 fixture, an incandescent bulb or CCFL need a type of fixture...
If you're asking about the hood or cover for the fixture it needs to be of a material that will resist the heat output of the bulb, will not melt and will not burn. Also you're going to get better results is the light has a reflective hood directing more light towards the plants.
