Hello,

I came across your website searching for info to help me identify the genus and species of this chameleon. I am not very familiar with chameleons and I am a bit confused what kind of chameleon I have here. I am hoping if you can help me identify this chameleon. Please see attached. I was at first thinking it might be a rough or mountain chameleon or flap neck chameleon but then again I saw some pictures of flap neck that doesn’t resemble the one I have in this picture. I would greatly appreciate any help you can offer.

Thank you,

Joy Jocson

Joy,

Do you have information on where you took that photo? It does appear to be a Ch. rudis but there are a couple other very similar species that it could be and the location you were when you took the photo would finalize eliminating them as possibilities.

Chris

Indeed some extra information is need. But my first thought was rudis as well. And then not the often important sternfeldi but the real rudis. I'm also interested in where the picture is taken.

Hi! Thank you very much for all your help.

Unfortunately, I don't have that info about the location of this chameleon. I only have this photo given to me by our product development team and we needed to just identify it's genus and specie and get some facts about it's habitat; diet; and interesting facts.

So far, majority has been identifying this as chamaeleon rudis. But there ar 2 people who said it might be female C. jacksonii but without giving more info about it's location they cannot be definite either. I checked the jacksonii and it has horns which the chameleon on the photo does not have.

I really appreciate all your help.

Joy

Joy,

While many female Jackson's don't have horns, this animal is definitely not a female Chamaeleo jacksonii. It is in the Chamaeleo rudis species complex, and more then likely a Chamaeleo rudis.

Chris

I indeed would say rudis as said or schubotzi. I say this because the casque is not as developed as in many rudis forms. And the dorsal crests also makes it hard. This could be for both species as well.

So with only this picture for me it would be either one of those species.

But as chris said for sure this is no jacksonii female.
