Question about staining wood frame

Hi everyone, I am building a large enclosure for a free range area and am staining the wood with water proof stain. My question is do I need to apply some sort of coating over the stain to keep it safe for the Chameleons?

Any advice is greatly appreciated... Thanks!!!

I would use a water base polyurathane. Let it dry real good before you put your chams in there ,. For the record I'm a cabinet maker ,stainer,restorer. So I know my lacquer s,varnishes,etc. in my opinion that is the safest finish that I know ,still has chemicals but once dry your good.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate your professional input!!! I stained it with BEHR Premium wood coating transparent weather proofing wood finish. Is the whole thing no good now or can I coat it with what you are suggesting? And is there a specific brand you recommend? Thanks!

The stain is fine but with Cham humidity lvls it best to get liquid plastic/polyurethane make sure to get the outdoor stuff indoor stuff weakens from sunlight (or so my dad the construction work said). Good luck

Good advice!
I have also used latex based stain on reptile enclosures w/ no VOC's... but for the life of me I am not certain of the brand because it was a while ago.
anyone?? hmmm...Olympic stain maybe??

i used out door deck sealant

Suzi I think your good ,the best thing is don't leave that enclosure outside all the time , any exterior finish doesn't matter which kind should be sanded lightly and a light coat of the same finish put on once a year or two because the element s will weaken the outer layer then it will flake ,those flakes will be dangerous to your chams . Once u do the retouch annually or so don't use that cage for a week until that new finish dries real good,.
