Pygmy Chameleon

Hi everybody, this is my first post and it is a little sad. My pygmy died after I had only had him 2 weeks. I am looking for answers, I had done my research, read alot on this forum but somewhere I did something wrong. This is part of my research and learning process.

Species, pygmy chameleon, not sure on age but not full grown. Bought from Pet Store who got it from a reliable source. I have had him two weeks.

Handling, we did not handle him much we were trying to let him get acquinted with his new home. I have quite a few reptiles and we always just leave them to adjust.

Feeding - I was getting the smallest crickets I could, they would be about 2 weeks old. I was putting in about 3 a day. His substrate was Jungle Moss so I was worried that he could not see them so I buried a small bowl in the Moss and then put the crickets in there. I only did this the day before he died. I also breed my own mealworms so I was putting some really small ones in for him. I do not know if he was eating. I tried to hand feed but this did not work either.

Supplements - calcium every 3 day

Watering - I would spray down his enclosure about 4 time a day

Fecal - never saw any

History - I don't have a history. He came from a breeder in Calgary, shipped to Lethbridge where I got him from the pet shop

Cage Type - I had him in a 10 gallon tank, substrate was a mixture of jungle moss and plantation soil.

Lighting - just a low watt uvb light

Temps - went no higher that 75 in the day and about 70 at night

Humidity - I sprayed his cage 4 times a day did not have a gauge

Plants - no real plants, just one of those twisty branch things with a silk plant wrapped around so that he had hiding place.

Placement - He was in my reptile room on one wide of his tank is a tree frog and on the other side a turtle. He was by the door, so that he did not get to hot.

Location - Lethbridge, Canada

So I am wondering if I sould have put him in something smaller with maybe papertowel as substrate so that I could monitor him a little better. He did move around but not much. He would come out in the morning find a spot and just hang out all day. When I put his light out he would go to another spot for the night. Yesterday we checked on him and by daughter held him and he seemed fine. An hour later he died

Any advise would be great. I am devestated as I hate losing any animal, this is only the 2nd one to die in my care and I have about 18 animals.

Thanks in advance

Michele

the exact same thing happened with me with my pig. every thing looked good it was drinking it was eating then it was dead. Mine was wild caught so it could of been parasites or old age or a mistake on my part.

These animals are very sensitive.
NO handling.
I would guess it was wild caught.
Your enclosure needs some work ... check out the pygmy enclosure forum.
It is my strong belief that this species (assuming you had a brev) requires company. They live in tribes, not solo.
I would never keep just one
If you get your enclosure right, no feeding dish or cup is necessary, they will hunt and find feeders just fine.
pinhead or even week old crickets are way too small. They need 1/4 inch crickets, 3-4 per animal every other day.

the pygmys always amazed me with the size of crickets they can take down. My guy seemed to go for the biggest possible crickets it could get.
