Pumpkin and another Monster clutch

Well , I got home today and noticed pumpkin made use of her laying bin just about 26 days after Raul and her got busy. Her head was dirty and she was as flat as a board.

I started digging and founds the eggs at about 12 or so inches down. I started to place them in the container. When I was finished I had a clutch of 45 eggs in the container. I was shocked. This is her second clutch She was mated about two months after the first clutch. So they should be fertile. Her first clutch was a shocking 41 eggs. Thats a total of 86 eggs in just about three months time.

I am concerned with the numbers. I feed her every other day and only about 5 (4 wk) old crickets and an occasional super and silky. When she was gravid I fed her the same with extra dusting of calcium. and a snack of silkworms and hornworms in between. I cut back after her first clutch was so large to avoid this exact thing. I plan on giving her a break. She will not be mated again and I am going to drop the temps a bit.

Does anyone have any suggestions or reasoning as to why she may be laying such large clutches? I have a sambava kept the same exact way that laid a clutch of 24 eggs.

Usually its overfeeding but I have cut food back before and still had a large clutch. The stud is packing super sperm!

Could be you male and female's genetics.

Let's just hope YOU aren't this fertile- we don't need Ryan septuplets running around.

After your chameleon laid the previous batch of eggs how did you handle the feeding? Did you feed her well for a couple of days and then cut her back or what?

yeah , I pretty much gave her what she wanted with an extra dusting of cal for the first two maybe three days. Then back on schedule to 4-5 crickets every other day. We do give her the occasional super, silk, or hornworm.

I think I mentioned it before that I have a sambava female that just laid 24 eggs that gets the exact same care.

Pumpkin Just laid another Monster Clutch 40 eggs. Thats a total of 118 eggs in three clutches. I guess she is programed to lay big clutches. No matter how little I feed her she still produces on average 40 eggs a clutch.

I think you should give her a break to build up her calcium. It does take a lot out of them. By break I mean at least 6 months. If you are mating for sales, you should have a couple females and rotate them, it is safer and healthier for your fems.

what are they producing,

was the second and third from retained egg/sperm?

The third was from retained, I mated her twice. I am not sure who has the sisters but Pumpkin and Raoul are BB Ambilobes.

The males is from the Kammers and the Female originated from Westcoast Chams "Da Vinci" but I got her from DavidR.

Wow Ryan Congrats-Pumpkin is quite the egg producer! And Raoul, what a stud. When is the first clutch going to hatch? Better get your FF cultures started!

Forgive me I am a little confused by the question highlighted above but I will try to address it the best I can.

She was not mated again after I posted that. The 3rd clutch was from retained sperm as a result of the first two matings. It did not or does not matter if I mated her again as she still would have (and did) produced the clutch of eggs either way. She will be mated in the future but she is getting a break. I prefer fertile vs infertile eggs. I mate my breeding females twice then give them a break before mating them again.

Hope that clears up any confusion. :)

Ryan, i didnt mean anything personal..Really. I think you rock.. One of the few.

I just was confused by your comment and then reading that she had another clutch, that I assumed were fertile. I know nothing about breeding as I dont or wont, so I wasnt aware that eggs could be layed fertile from retained sperm. Apologies for my ignorance.. Guess I should use teh search bar more often myself..

Anyways, I apologize, Congrats, and Best luck.

No need to apologize , I wasn't very clear and it was good to clarify what I meant for the thread. Sorry if I led you to believe I "took that the wrong way". :)

I am a little disappointed I did not get a :) in the post from you but I guess I will get over it. :D
