Puffy Panther P-Eyes.

I tried to make it an alliteration! Or whatever that lit. term is.

Is it normal for Panther's eyes to look a little puffy at times?

A few days ago he had a clear gel-like substance in his eyes, which I flushed out with some saline solution.

Now it looks like his eye-lid is a bit extended from his eye, possibly from more clear gel-like substance?

I use a Repti-Sun 5.0, house bulb (got it from Chad, don't know the wattage) I mist often,
I have a ficus and a pothos, he's acting fine, not fretting or anything, but I think it looks uncomfortable.

I'm just overreacting, I hope. :p

I would get a picture if I could - the batteries on my camera died about.. 4 days ago? They are expensive lol. I will see if I can't get some by tonight.

Having some kind of extra clear gel over or discharge from the eyes doesnt sound normal to me.

Fiscus can irratate eyes. Could be a hundred other causes. Picture may help.
might also want to complete the "how to ask for help" in case there's a husbandry issue you're not aware of.

  • Cage Type - Screen cage, like the one from LLL with screen and aluminum.
  • Lighting - Reptisun 5.0 and a normal house bulb..
  • Temperature - 76 Degrees, basking up to 85.
  • Humidity - 60% humidity seems like the best we can do with Arizona weather.. Spraying, drip system, digital therm.
  • Plants -Ficus/Pothos
  • Location - Temporarily in the dining room (lowest traffic area because we never eat in there or really do anything..)
  • Your Chameleon - Panther, born sometime in August, about a week.

  • Handling - When cleaning out the cage.
  • Feeding - Dubias, superworms as a snack, crickets, Sandra's bread gutload, carrots.
  • Supplements - Herptivite, Calcium with and without Vit D.
  • Watering - Misting and drip, I see him drink.
  • Fecal Description - White urates and black/brownish poo.. with the recent sperm plug - yuck. :p
  • History - n/a

I think the culprit may be the Ficus. Sometimes Ficus sap can get on a chams eyes. Im guessing that the substance you saw was the sap.

Like it was said, could be one of a hundred other things.

It actually reminded me of the goo you get in your eyes more than anything. Should I remove the ficus? He never touches it.

Sure a good measure to do.
Ficus has been reported to cause eye problems to panther specifically.
use hibiscus instead.
I never put ficus in my panthers' cages for that exact reason.
I might be over reacting a bit. But, better safe than sorry.

If I could find a hibiscus that would FIT I would use it. Unfortunately the ones they sell at Home Depot/Lowes are in like 20 gallon tubs. It's ridiculous. They're HUGE!

I wouldent remove it. (referring to the ficus)

By goo we get in our eyes, do you mean the crusty greenish yellow things that are there when we wake up in the morning?

If it comes back wash it out again and call you vet and ask his opinion.

Yes, except this was clear. The vet we have doesn't deal with chameleons.. just exotics in general, but I'll give them a call, hopefully they won't charge us a "time fee".

me yemen chameleon got a kind of 'sleep' in her eyes, a clear ish goo, which flares up during shedding and during what i call 'dry days' (when im at work an unable to mist before she gets up) my vet told me it could have been caused by something in her eye but that flushing the eyes soon cleared up any major goo and just making sure she is hydrated keeps it away, please inform of any comments from the vet i would be interested to hear anothers story.
