I keep torn off bits of egg crate in the bin in order to shake crickets into my cup for dusting them. And lately I have been using water crystals instead of the watering dish.

That is the purpose for the fan in my bin. I also installed one of those carbon smell absorbers that rainbow mealworm sells on their site.
