Pregnant

I found out a few weeks ago that I'm pregnant and I was wondering if anyone knows what I should do about handling my chameleons? I have been avoiding it and have been having my fiance clean the cages and everything, but I was just wondering if it's necessary. I'm 8 weeks today if that matters. Any advice anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I am not a doctor.

i know the association of reptiles and salomanilla *sp* is somethign they tell you to avoid, now i don't know much about virus such as this and its relation to pregnancy.

BUT you should still be able to handle your animals, BUT always wash your hands after with an anti bacterial soap.

also you probably want to continue having your husband clean the cages, even if there was no harm ,its one less thing for you to stess out about.

IM sure hopefully there is someone else that can give you better advice.

Ya I would agree, I think it would be fine. I am in nursing school...so have some idea, but am also not a doctor. But, I think that there is no immediate threat. I would just make sure to wash with antibacterial soap each time after handling, not just the cam, but feeders or anything else related, including feces. I think it would be difficult to contract any virus or parasite or bacteria from a reptile when referring to normal handler contact. I would be cautious if you have any cuts or open sores. Be careful when handling their feces as well. Hope this helps a little.

Yep, lots of handwashing-you should be fine. Don't go licking any cage bottoms or anything! (sorry :))

Congratulations Kelz1916! Hope you're feeling okay. I was sick as a dog at 8 weeks. Thank goodness it went away in my 3rd month.

I lived out in a more rural area at the time and had dozens of chickens and a family of pygmy goats. I just made sure that I washed my hands after taking care of them.

Very good advice about watching out for any cuts...

I say this is a perfect excuse to make your husband do all the cleanup work. :D:p:)

Congratulations! When I was pregnant I didn't stop handling my animals and cleaning their cages. You just need to be sure that you wash VERY well, but you should probably be doing that anyhow. :p

But as Ryan said, maybe this will get you out of 9 months of cage cleaning! (Just don't let your hubby catch you taking your chams out to play;) )

Thanks for all the advice. Sorry I didn't say this sooner, I've been out of town. I have always washed my hands after holding them and dealing with the feeders and cleaning cages so that won't be any different, but I have been getting him to clean the cages, saying that it's ok to hold the cham but not to clean their poop, haha! He goes for it so that's cool! Thanks again I really appreciate all your advice!
