Powersun Mercury Vapor UVB

Hey all,

After two trips to the vets, some eye ointment (delt with an eye infection) and getting scolded for letting my crickets run lose in the cage and that my heat wasn't hot enough, the vet told me to get the mercury vapor bulb to increase my heat and that I should be taking him outside when it's nice out. (Live in the bay area california)

So we went to petco and picked up the 100w, the 160w was pretty huge and looked overkill. I turn it on, it smells really hot, and then it burns out. It was on maybe for 1 min. I didn't touch it with my hand, and you can't hear any clinging inside, so now I get another errand today. Hopefully they don't give me grief about it.

I never had this bulb before because I didn't see anyone here talk about it. I also covered one side of his cage with a towel to help keep heat in. I am having trouble with heat because I live in a 2 story house, and my parents are cheap and keep the heat at 65. And it has been chilly this past month. I have the 2x2x4 screen cage.

Opinions on this bulb? It was freakin 70$

Is it the spiral type bulb (you know those energy efficient ones) or a normal bulb that we all used to use

I found a normal one, a 60w, I can feel the heat already.

My mom said they are going to stop making this kind soon?? We better stock up!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a Power Sun 100w, they put out alot of heat, I had to raise mine up higher to get the basking area temp around 90-95. The benefit of the light is that it is a heat light AND a UVB/UVA all in one. I have found that my cham actually doesnt like the light very much. So i also put a household bulb in the enclosure and ordered an Arcadia light.

I use the Powersun mercury vapor uvb and have been quite pleased with it. I know that if they get moved around they can be quite finicky. They will let you return it. I would get another one though... I really like them as I use is with my Chinese Water dragon who has a large enclosure. I also have some that I will use in my large FR play area. They can be quite hot so make sure you have it set back far enough but yet close enough for the uvb. I am waiting until my panthers and veil get bigger before it put in in the FR play area. Right now it would put out too much for the distance from were my lights are located so I just used the stip light for now with basking lights.

You need to make sure the holder for the bulb is made for bulbs that reach 160 watts. Also I would never buy them from petco they are way to expensive. BUY THEM ON AMAZON.COM I get 70 dollar bulbs for 30 on there :). They always have specials and great discounts.

ya it says it can hold up to 250w

we were in a rush to get more heat in the enclosure, but thanks for the heads up. I will check that out when I need a new one!
