I just got back from the vet a typical visit is $59 here in Illinois.
Caution... I have been to a few different reptile vets all reputable some have more experience than others and some are more aggressive than others. I found one that has many years of experience and takes a more try this and wait and see approach unless you need serious intervention, but if you are managing the care of your Chameleon and communicate any concerns on the forum you can mitigate most problems that arise.
Here are some of my life experiences and tell tale signs of how different Dr.s work...
I went to one young Dr. he was recommended by the Reptile show I go to as is my core Dr. the difference is that when I took one of my Panther Chams to the younger Dr. his approach was extremely aggressive and wanted to order all kinds of tests not to mention he put the poor guy through a ton of stress trying to draw blood, hydrating him with an IV, etc. needless to say after an hour with him the bill for the medication and treatment was going to come in at around $800 where I said I could not afford that he mentioned that he has always wanted a panther so I offered him to him and he treated him last I checked all the tests came back negative so his suspicions were just that and a little TLC manually hydrating with a syringe 3ml - 6ml a day with a little vitamin perk along with some pureed bug juice I could of hydrated him in less than a week using a more subtle approach. In the end the only thing wrong was dehydration and it was not as bad as the dehydration I have experienced with my current panther who is mending well and total out of pocket expenses have been around $200 to get him back on the right path. Knowing what I know now I am now better prepared to handle hydration issues should they arise again
A bit of advice look for someone that the breeders are using if you know any.
P.S. my current is suffering from mouth rot we are not sure how it surfaced but it has caused him to keep his eyes closed sit still all day and not eat or drink. We started with treating the eyes with medication but it was not the eyes in the end but issues surrounding the pain in his mouth from the open sores along his lip line. I am happy to say he is looking much better and suspect a full recovery in the coming week
