I just got him today, and the owner didnt have much info at all. Any advice is more than welcome. he is 9 inches long and very active and friendly. I got him a med fountain, heat light and repti glo 5.0 light with several climbing fixtures in a 55 gal tank. Please help me identify what kind of chameleon he is. The pic I have is also my profile pic, I cant seem to get it to upload here properly

That chameleon doesn't look very good! I can't see it clearly enough to tell what it is but it is definitely ill looking. PLease try to post a picture so i can accurately tell you how you should take care of it. But for starters no fountain they will not drink standing water you will have to mist it a few times daily. Also tanks are not recommended for many species and if it is a large species a 55 gallon aquarium just won't do. if you have a pic on your computer make sure hte file is small enough and you can press the paperclip icon when you go to post and you should be able to upload it

Thank u.

The pet store told me to get the fountain because they would not drink it unless it was moving water. I only have my phone to take/post pics, and they wont upload. Do u mean to actually spray it with a spray bottle? Thank u for ur help

I agree he does not look good in the that pic. His limbs look very skinny. The pet store was right, they will not drink from standing water, but a fountain is not the way to go. Get a spray bottle and spray the leaves and branches of the cage for about 3 minutes or so and hopefully he will start drinking. We really need to see pics of him before we start giving you help. Is he laying on the floor of the tank? Do you have places for him to climb? Foilages, vines, branches? What is in the cage?

He has branches, logs, but no folage in the tank, they told me to put coconut moss on the bottom, he has been very active since I got him, and he is eating well

0k what type of lighting do you have? You need foilage for them to seek cover and mock their natural habitat. Get rid of the water fall. They breed bacteria. Remove the substrate. They can injest it accidentally or intentially and become impacted and die.

Also a fish/tank aquarium is not an adequate cage for a chameleon even if the the pet store told you so. They usually do not know anything about chameleon care. Please try and get a pic up somehow of your chameleon so we can see what species you have, male or female and if it is indeed ill.

carol is right pet stores know virtually nothing about chameleons and usually just pull facts out of their A** to sound professional. Even the local reptile store I go to that is very knowledgeable didn't know squat about chameleon care until I started volunteering. They still have some issues caring for them. Chameleons are typically a pitty or impulse buy for people who want a reptile and think they look cool. People don't know just how expensive chameleons are.

Here is a better pic in my profile, he has been drinking from the fountain pretty good, but I did not think of the bacterea part, thank u! And no moss at all? I will get folage for him.

I agree with everyone, it sounds like you have been mislead by the store for profit. This animal will need daily mistings(3+) and the waterfall should be boxed back up and taken back hopefully. Throw away the husk stuff, no substrate is the way to go, these animals live in trees, not near the ground, and as stated can ingest the material and die, due to its foriegness, its just a bad idea. Your not the only one to be swindled, and we will help all we can :) I Suggest putting it in the shower asap, on a plant(or somthing) and letting the shower bounce off the wall and onto the animal. Hydration is most important here, so 30min in the shower would do it good, it does ANY chameleon good. Fill out this form, and then well go from there. ;)
(we pratically force anyone with any issue to fill it out, and we will be able to help much more if you do so)

gosh, I still cannot say what species it is! And we need to determine the sex for you!! yeah, the waterfall thing is just a bad idea. And if you are away and they poop in it and then drink out of it well you get the idea!.... The moss thing is not a good idea either as what we stated before. when you begin misting your cage and running a dripper(which manyof us do) you will have another potential for bacteria. not to mention a great place for feeders to burrow and hide!

I just got it today, I dont know the species,or sex. I have it in a 55 gal tank with a heat lamp and a uvb light, never been tested for parasites, its 90 degrees in the basking spot,it hasnt pooped yet, I dont know how to measure hummidity, its lid is 6ft from the ground, its in my living room, and I have handled it off an on for about 90 min today, I live in florida, it eats crickets with a powder

go to photobucket, open an account, it is free. Try doing it from there. Why can't you upload any pics?

OP sent me a pic, it is in fact a gracefull chameleon, I have no experience with them, but appears female. It is very dehydrated, and has sunken eyes.
