thanks for sharing - i have heard of colored silkies before via feeding them colored foods such as beats for red guys - didn't want to risk it though cause that would eventually kill em. I wonder what other colors look like?

I also heard you could make hornworms red from feeding them bell peppers

it sounds like something I would like to try

I had a bright :) yellow cocoon spun yesterday. The adult silkworm looked like a normal one. But cocoon was much smaller than normal.

did you feed the silkworm anything different besides mulberry leaves/chow

I heard that if you feed a silk worm something mulberry/chow the silk will turn yellow

that is why silk producers only feed mulberry to get white silk......... most of the time:rolleyes:

i always use the chow mix and when it comes time to cocooning i will get both white and yellow cocoons - less yellow than white. I have noticed that the yellow cocoons usually are smaller than the white ones. I have to be honest i love this feeder - the only money i spend on them now is buying the chow the raising and breeding is SO easy. (just keep em clean and beware of the silkie funk when one dies they take others out with em)

No, just Mulberry leaves. They came from Coastal silkworms as mediums, so had a artificial diet prior to me using leaves for the last two weeks.

The worms are not pink in color, only the silk cocoon is. The only colored silkworm available in the US commercially is the black silkworm or zebra silkworm. The worms are fed a red die to get them that color so the silk they spin is colored. The worms are white in color for the green and pink silkworm eggs. If you visit our website you can see the color of the silk cocoons.

reverse silk worms start as moths, then they cocoon - in which they turn to worms and then back to eggs just reverse the whole process :D. but really what are reverse silkworms?

Standard worms are mostly white in appearance, with thin black lines at body segments. Reverse silkworms depending on sex, have more black in their bodies than white.

No that term is just a name for the skin color of the silkworm. We call these worms black silkworms others call them reverse zebra silkworms;

Also note the egg color of these worms are not purple but rather more a brown color. Very cool looking worms.
