picture ethics on instagram.

Is it wrong to re-post a picture that you received in email on Instagram when you give credit to the owner of the chameleon?

Is it a chameleon you are looking to buy? Best bet is to just ask them. Most do not care, especially if you are giving photo creds

I'm not sure what the Instagram etiquette is (I don't really use that app) but I get pretty testy when people steal my photos and intellectual property and I have used DMCA takedown and cease and desist letters to have my photos removed from websites.

Technically the person who took the photo owns the copyright whether there is a watermark or not but it is so easy for someone else to copy the photo and use it for their own profit and other nefarious reasons. Unfortunately photo creds in a comment section does not follow the copied photo and any creative control is lost. Personally I would not repost the photo unless I had full authorization from the photographer and the piece was watermarked with their name and date. That's just me though.

Read up on the instagram rules. Some places claim ownership of photos posted on their site. I do not use Instagram either so I don't know. You can always watermark the photographer's name onto the photo, that way the credit can follow the photo.

Errrr, trace is right. I would advise AGAINST watermarking anyone's work as most if not all photographers do not use them anymore, they feel they are distracting, and deface the photo--mostly we rely on exif data and meta tagging to keep up with our work. I am a full time photographer out of Atlanta and this is literally what I do to pay my bills. So product control as I call it, is a huge part of my business.

Just ask them. And if you don't ask credit and tag them but know they have the right to request it be removed. And if they registered it they could charge you for each day you have it up. Registered copyright and copyright are the same and they're not. Both protect the artist, but registered images allow the artist to get a certain dollar amount per day their work was used without their knowledge. All of my published work is copyrighted. It's not that hard, and in a saturated market with a million thieves, legit photogs who do this full time are protecting ourselves more and more. A simple email asking for permission could fix it all;) Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. This was nothing nefarious or business related at all. It was simply a geek who got too excited.

I reposted a friend's picture on my personal page and gave him full creadit. Since we were such good friends and i clearly gave him credit it didn't even cross my mind that i would offend him. When i called to tell him how popular his pic was i basically lost my friend.

I do admit that I'm in the wrong and should have asked first..I'd understand the resentment if i were using the photo for business or to benefit me in any way... but just can't comprehend it in this situation. There was nothing to loose or gain for either party by my posting it.

It sucks that I lost a friend over this.

Well my advise on friendships totally comes from the mother side of me. So I say give it some time, and try again. Friends, good ones at least are a dime a dozen. If you care about this one, apologize again in a few days. Don't dismiss his feelings, just let him know you meant no harm. Not knowing his gear, his training, or post processing skills I can't say much on his take on things. But perhaps he is bummed his work got praise on a platform that was not his. Either way, give it a few days ;) Chin up! Friendships have been saved from a lot worse. If it is over, then at least you gave it your all.
